In the past I have thrown away anything battery operated where the batteries have leaked-corroded and the terminals of the device have become covered in a crust of battery acid type stuff. Just had the same happen with my son's tv remote. I decided to Google a remedy and discovered vinegar on a cotton wool bud cleans all the crap off and remote now works perfect.

Any other handy tips?

To quickly sharpen scissors (albeit temporary) make a few cuts on aluminium foil.

Crush 1 or 2 litre plastic bottles then roll them up then put the lid on, stops air getting in and save a lot of space in your bin or recycling box.

If you get your shoes or boots wet and you don't want them to stink, stick a teabag in each one as you dry them out. I don't know how it works but it keeps that rank wet shoe smell at bay (has done wonders for my golf shoes in particular).

I did just that on my holiday last week. It’s one of these things that seems so blatantly obvious that I can’t believe I never thought of it before. The only reason I did it was because on my previous holiday the room didn’t have enough sockets. I had plenty travel adapters, but they were no use to me. We had two phones two iPads and a couple of other things to charge. No problem with a four plug adapter.

not just abroad, I take onewhen I go to any hotel. It means I can heat my straighteners at the same time as using the hairdryer and if you take one with a long enough flex you may even see in the mirror at the same time.

Now I take one with the usb chargery bit too

I've used this for years, makes life so much easier considering most folk have a phone each, electric tooth brush, kindle, hair dryer/straighteners, MIG welder etc.

As long as you don't go crazy and plug in all the huge wattage appliances at once you'll be good, 4 mobile phone chargers won't draw that much!

If you can't get a metal lid off a jar run it under the hot tap for a few seconds. The metal expands and makes it much easier to move.

Likewise, if you've got stacked glasses jammed together put ice cubes or cold water in the top one and dip the bottom one in fairly hot water (not too hot or it might crack).

When cooking bacon, sausages or black pudding etc under the grill put some water in your grill pan, just enough to cover the surface of it. This stops all the fat that drips off the meat during cooking burning in the bottom of the grill pan. When you've finished cooking just pour it away and rinse the grill pan.

Slice link sausages in half before you grill or fry them, they cook quicker and go nice and crispy.

to avoid the bacon twisting during cooking, snip through the fat on the outside edge of the bacon, every centimetre or so, the length of the rasher.
The fat contracts when cooking and pulls the meat together. Snipping stops this, and keeps the fat (and flavour) intact.

Perfect for rolls and butties, plus no more stringy bacon.
