    Van into Campervan conversion

Does anyone know of anywhere in the Edinburgh and Lothians area to get this done?

Also maybe a ball part figure for the cost?

My son-in-law did this on his own and made a terrific job of it. I realise you want to have it done but when I speak to him in a few hours I’ll pass on any useful information to you

If your doing it yourself MVM have pretty much all you need.

Or if you want a professional job Andy at AJC is a top block albeit a bit further afield.
He’s done a couple of vans for me & is meticulous in his work. Highly recommended.

Thanks for this. The price difference between buying one converted and buying a van is astronomical. Much better value buying one to convert by the looks of it.

He converted a Renault Master van. He didn’t buy custom made furniture etc., but designed, made and fitted the stuff himself. He got professionals to put in the blackened windows. My daughter reckons it cost them around £3k including, gas hob, fridge, windows etc. but that saved a fortune in labour. I see that a couple of guys have given you info but if you want more info re. doing the job yourself, let me know.

Yes agreed, sourcing a vat free panel van & self converting is definitely most cost effective.
A tip if going fully converted is have any pop top roof done first then wiring, insulation & carpeting. Units usually go in last.
It goes without saying the VW T5 is the king of modern campers.

Yes, he knows his T5’s inside out.
Last time I spoke to him he had a lead time of at least 6 months due to demand for conversions.
A busy boy with a good team of staff, very well respected in the Vdub world. 😉

Ps thanks for sorting links 👍

Put three chords to that, and it will be way better than anything on the main board.

I feel your pain, I’ve bought & sold at least a dozen VW vans privately over the last few years, I quite like the buzz of it but you definitely need to
    a/ have cash in hand
    b/ be prepared to travel
    c/ know what’s worth pursuing
    to get what your after.
Set a budget, aim for the highest spec within your budget & be quick if something comes up you like.
Do any haggling before travelling to avoid disappointment.

I still keep an eye on prices weekly as an interest & would have no prob highlighting any that stick out for your budget if it helped.
    Good luck 👍

It's a VW I'm after, any advice on what to look out for when I view them? Looking at two before the match today.

Depending on engine size if mileage is 60k+ ask if belt / water pump has been changed, if not allow an extra £400 to have it done. A snapped belt is pretty catastrophic engine wise.
Some vans have had a remap, I’d avoid them unless there’s a pre / post print out.
If your converting insurance companies like Brentacre are good as they allow unlimited modifications as long as you let them know.
I wouldn’t rule out approaching Edinburgh VW to ask if they have any trade in vehicles, you’ll have vat to pay but have the safety of 12 months Full warranty.
Feel free to pm me your budget & vehicle requirements & I’ll have a look 👀

I’d go manual, there are a few DSG vans out there but servicing can be expensive! If your looking for a newer type VW the CR Diesel engine is relatively reliable and a lot smoother than the old 1.9 PD type engines. I would consider a Merc Sprinter if within your budget as well.

The two I looked at today probably needed anything between 6-8k of work to get the interior to the standard we want, the body work minted and it sprayed or wrapped.

Overall I think we could go to 12k. It's not enough money so going to have to leave it.
