A good battling second half performance from NI, they definitely had the Swiss rattled but it just wasn't enough.

A good effort from N Ireland, rode their luck at times especially in the first half but they gave it good go, such a pity such an important tie was settled on such a bad decision in the first leg.

Gerry Armstrong, nice fella and I enjoy his near rants from time to time but he has to be the most biased commentator in the world.

As big Ian used to say, it's a sad day for Ulster

Have to feel for them; knocked out by a shocking penalty decision.

They gave a good account of themselves tonight and coped with the conditions better but they missed their chance in Belfast the other night IMO.

    N. Ireland done really well to get where they did, Switzerland need to find a striker before the world cup or they will be going home quite early!

Well done Switzerland delighted they won through.

Thought they played well and hugely unlucky with the appalling penalty decision the other night.

  9. #158
I thought Northern Ireland played well tonight, they'll count themselves unlucky not to have at least scored.

I don't watch Switzerland at all but it's quite incredible that they have such an impressive record over the last couple of years having watched that tonight.

I can't see them making much of an impression in Russia if tonight's performance is anything to go by.

The boy Embolo who came on is a player. He's had a rough time with injuries though.

Thought it was funny when Ian Dowie, back in the studio at the end of the game . Switzerland had players on their bench tonight from clubs like Udinese and Schalke, when N.Ireland had players on the bench from Millwall and Rangers🤣

Any takers for a Greek come back against Croatia? (4-1 down after the first leg)...............

    ..... thought not.

I think the only time in the last year Greece have scored three goals or more in a game was the 4 against Gibraltar. I think this would be right up there with winning the Euros if they pulled this one off.

Aye he looks good, they can't persist with Seferovic though, he is brutal.

Croatia has to be dark horses for the tournament. Some great players: Rakitic and Modric behind Mandzukic is a bit scary.

    Who topped their qualifying group?

I agree though, love watching Croatia play.

cough Lovren in the back four. ... seriously though a more than decent team. Dark houses for the tournament? well no not for me but more than capable like the likes of Portugal, Poland and England etc of giving somebody a bloody nose.

Finished behind Iceland, although they are no mugs these days. Croatia only lost twice, in Istanbul and in Iceland, have got some world class players and will have a big support in Russia, and will be the locals second team as well.

Doubt it. Historically Croatia has been the sworn enemy of Serbia which has always been an ally of Russia. Might even see Croatian and Russian fans fighting.

True, and the Russians have long memories. They still associate Croatia with the Nazis, as do the Serbs. Lots of unpleasant history.

Unthinkable that Italy won’t qualify for a World Cup yet that’s exactly what I think will happen tonight.

Not anywhere near the best Italy team however the players individually are more than capable of dispatching the swedes but, ultimately, will probably be hamstrung yet again by more baffling management decisions.

Can see 1-0 or 2-0 then a sucker punch Swedish goal near the end. Despite that, there’s 80k at a raucous San Siro so the swedes may well freeze, they wouldn’t be the first...
