    Football in Athens

    Hey gang.

Plotting a trip to Athens in December, was wondering about catching a local match while I'm there at one of the Superleague clubs.

Has anyone done similar? I can only find fixtures for the first two matchdays which seems strange, are they only ever announced at the last minute or something?

Also, without sounding like a total wuss, is it safe? Any time I hear about Greek football it seems to be for violence - is this just a case of we only hear the bad news and it's not a normal occurrence?

    Cheers

I was in Athens for our game against AEK, horrible experience. Attending Ibrox is like a Sunday School picnic in comparison.

The 'first game' there was great!
Few days in Athens and no Hibs getting beat to spoil it!

Panathinikos play in green and have a shamrock in their badge for some reason. My friend supports Olympiakos who are the sworn enemy but basically the "Juventus" of Greece in that they take their support from everywhere in the country. He also said that games against PAOK can be pretty nasty but, baring that, it's pretty normal fare although wearing colours is probably best avoided.

Think they've got a new stadium now, which might help. Not sure they're even still in the top division though?

All I really know is Olympiakos' stadium is near the cruise terminal!

We went to a Panathinaikos game in February. Nice little stadium. Didnt see any trouble whatsoever, although the place was swarming in police.

There were a few flares half heartedly set off when Pana scored, but that was about it. Pana 'Ultras' all stood behind the goal.

We bought our tickets directly of the Panathinaikos website about 2 weeks before we travelled.

Their season kicks off this weekend and can be pretty unreliable at posting fixtures for some reason. Most of the clubs have a gate number where the ultras congregate so if you avoid this you'll be fine. Get your freshly cooked souvlaki outside the ground for 1 Euro if you're peckish - better than anything on offer at ER.

Love a Souvlaki, me. Cheers. So it's normal for the fixtures to be this, well, secretive?

Tagging me into this thread, as I'll be in Athens in October. I had the same frustration as you. Only seem to have Cup and European matches listed so far, for all the city clubs.

Waiting to hear back from a friend concerning the fixtures.... hopefully tomorrow.

OK, posting the fixtures makes the post size too large so I will try it in segments.

The first following post is for the first week in December - the only one I have so far.

The following three posts are for October.

Cheers for that - I can't speak Greek but I'm handy enough with the Greek alphabet from trying to figure things out from previous holidays so I'll manage!

I wore a Panathanaikos top to that game. I was getting throat slitting gestures inside the ground.
Do you remember the lad at the top of the fence burning the yanky flag.
