Timothy and Hill resign - did they jump or were they shoved?

A fair few in the party, allegedly including senior ministers, have been uncomfortable with the power and influence they have.

A threat or 2 of disobedience from the benches if they stayed, which May can ill afford, might have forced her hand. Definitely pushed imo.

Cameron made May sack Hill previously. Fallen on their swords, they will get nice jobs in consultancy in the meantime, and she will bring them back IF she can strengthen her position in the future imo.

Reports that senior Tories said Timothy and Hill had to go or they would push for a leadership challenge.

It weakens May on at least two fronts. Regardless of their abilities, they were her closest advisers and acted as a firewall for her. She doesn't have that now.

Secondly, it empowers her opponents inside the party. If you recall when Major was PM, he faced an absolutely torrid time from Howard, Portillo and Lilley but wasn't able to sack them. I don't think they even managed close to weakening the PM by forcing his closest advisers out. Major still ended up going down the 'back me or sack me' route by putting his leadership on the table. May couldn't possibly do that and her opponents in the party will know that.

May has to do what she's told now. Noticed some briefing agajnst her main threat, David Davis, today as well.

Someone had to pay the price, and they cant get rid of May at the moment.

Maybe the DUP will have some good, capable and fair minded advisers that she can utilise...
