Good stuff mate, Ive not been on the guitar as much as I would like to either due to working silly hours etc, need a good weeks annual leave so I can get wired in again. Guitar I have is flat backed black ash wood, its a 24 fret job but has a short neck (compared to standard length) good to see you are using youtube, I like guitar.com and in some cases it is good for alternative chord/tab patterns. As mentioned above by another poster, Marty Schwartz is good to take tips from as he goes back to basics, the one I have picked & have learned a lot from is Andy Crowley, check his lessons out on facebook, he is really good.

    Stick with it mate👍
Andy Crowley is also on YouTube as Andy Guitar. He’s good.

Have you tried using lighter gauge strings to help your fingers? If you are using the strings supplied with the guitar, they are probably 12s or 13s. Try going down to 11s. It won’t eradicate the sore fingers but it will help. Also, you don’t really need to press down all that hard onto the fret board. Try to relax and play a few chords and each time slowly reduce the pressure until you can’t actually hear the notes in the chord clearly. Work back down with slightly more pressure until you find what feels and sounds right.

I’m getting back into guitar after a few years out. The rhythm stuff has never really left me but I’m trying to reteach myself lead. I don’t think my wife is enjoying it, especially when I crank up the effect where I get my name on here from.
Thanks for the advice mate, still pretty new to the six string stuff with regards strings etc, next time Im at Red Dog or Scayles I will check them out

You can also get coated strings by Elixir and a few others which can be a bit more gentle on the fingers. They are more expensive but also last longer than the normal type.

Cheers bud, funny thing is, my hands are weathered and have taken a fair battering over the years having worked as a Scaffolder and a Drayman, perhaps I just have to man up and get on with it, I dont see Amy Macdonald greeting about having sore fingers 😆

    I've been playing since I was 13, I'm 36 now.

I was having free double bass lessons in school but got kicked out for messing around. Asked for a bass guitar for Christmas, learnt to play that for a but then asked for an acoustic guitar for my birthday.

Was a massive Oasis fan when I was in school in the 90's so started learning all their tunes. Then I got a squire strat which was superb to learn on. Can still play most of the oasis songs now!! Learnt Barr chords this way as bonehead played nothing but barr chords!

For me I really enjoyed playing and I remember playing that opening to Shakermaker and was amazed that it sounded exactly like the CD. I never saw it as a chore as well and before long I was learning all sorts of stuff. Joined a band when I was 15 and we played a few gigs in pubs etc back home in Wales.

Recently found a few pals in my work who also played but I found that although they were good players they had zero confidence playing in front of other people so the Jam was pretty poor. Planning on having another one soon.

What guitar does everyone play BTW?

I've got a Fender strat (Mexican) and a Epiphone SG (cherry red). I've also got an acoustic (tanglewood) that my pal gave me for free and a number of guitairas back in Wales Including Squire bass and a couple of Squire strats.

Bass is SX custom, bottom end price wise but excellent to play & learn on, electro accoustic is a Chord black ash, has a shorter neck & again excellent to play, both left handed instruments.

I've a all black Gibson SG Standard - I'm crap at playing it but it's a lovely piece of kit to have 😁
I imagine if I ever win the lottery and buy a supercar it'll be similar. I won't be any better a driver but I'll look cool as ....

Epiphone Les Paul Express 3/4 size in sunburst.

Squire affinity Telecaster in butterscotch blonde.

    Squire Bullet Mustang in black.

Cruiser by Crafter strat copy in sunburst (a real bargain if you can find a decent one...mine is crap.)

Encore electro acoustic in sunburst (Ovation copy)

    Good stuff.

Can't justify buying a Gibson SG or Les Pau don't play enough and only play at home so the epiphone is fine for that.

Want to get an epiphone, casino, dot or Sheraton next. Something semi.

A few months ago, I was looking at Epiphone semi hollows and there were loads available for about £300, some even under. These weren’t dots, I’m talking about casino coupes, ES 335 pros, ES 339’s and wildcats. I don’t know who sets the prices but you’re now struggling to find any one of them under £360 and some are north of £400! Bloody ridiculous.

Anyway, I’ve heard some pretty poor reviews regarding build quality and their necks felt weird when I tried them in guitar guitar. Lovely looking things but what’s fir you won’t go by you...

Yamaha ERG-121. Want a Les Paul though. It’ll be interesting if the impending bankruptcy of Gibson will have any impact on the cost of Gibsons (and Epiphones for that matter).

Also on the hunt for a new acoustic as my old one (a classical guitar) is finished. When changing the high E string it gets to B when I’m tuning it then snaps at the bridge between B and E. Tried various different strings, I think there must be some rough bit in the bridge that I can’t get to sand down that is causing it. It was only cheap.

    Gibson SG 50s tribute
    Fender Duo Sonic
Also a 3/4 size Freshman acoustic which is a brilliant guitar for the money.

Much prefer the aesthetics of Fenders, especially Jaguars. But the SG is just so much easier to play due to the wider neck, especially for stuff with a lot of string bends, so the Fender barely gets a look in

Putting my bass guitar onto hib-bay tomorrow at some point to fund another accoustic, selling it along with amp, leads, distortion pedal, boss electric tuner & Hal Leonard books. Its a cracking bass for learning, in perfect condition so if anyone is interested or know of anyone interested give me a shout.

    Ps-Its a left handed bass 👍

When I was 17 I couldn’t afford decent gear. Bought my first bass for under £50 in Boston’s dodgy second hand shop on Leith Walk. An all black SG copy (no make). Cobbled together bits and pieces of amps/speakers when joined a band. Now... 36 years later I’ve built up a decent collection but no band. Plenty bargains out there on the likes of gumtree if you’re patient.

I bought lead guitar from Bostons as we were going to start a skinhead band 😆 plugged it into an amp, not a peep, on further inspection noticed all the electrics were goosed, never got that band off the ground 😆

I think I’ll be joining you. It’s just sinking in that I ordered a Fender telecaster on my credit card at 3am on Sunday morning. It must be God’s way of telling me I need a Fender telecaster...or God’s way of telling me I need to stop drinking red wine.

So yeah, my current telecaster and mustang are all in mint condition so I’m open to offers. 😁

You could always try a site called Reverb. That’s what I’ll be doing if nobody I know wants mine. Lower commission than Ebay.👍🏼

It's God's way of telling you need ANOTHER Fender Telecaster.

I've also heard the word of the Lord.

Good shout mate, will have a look at that, have put it up on a few buy & sell sites but not a peep, looking at getting a Tanglewood Crossroads TWCR (Whiskey Barrel Burst) if I ever get rid of my bass 👍

I got a Squiere Bullet Stratocaster last year, it's a nice guitar - easy to play and ideal for me (who, despite having owned a guitar for years, is still pish).

Years ago I had a US Fender Strat, it was beautiful, but I had to sell it to get out a bad financial situation at the time (19 and lots of debt wasn't a great idea).

If I ever eventually get good enough at guitar to justify the spend, I'm going to replace that guitar.

The lord has just told me that I need a black duo-sonic. The mint green pick guard is just pure filth so I couldn’t disagree.

    Have you bought it yet?
    Looking to part with mine....
Surf green with mint green pick guard.
Could probably give you it at a bit of a bargain price.

Good stuff. If your guitar is in that dark colour I see when I google it, it looks like one moody beast.

Gets fantastic reviews so I hope it does it for you.

I’ve ordered the black one. The surf green one looks awesome though and that would be my number one choice if I was 15 years younger.

Keep it mate as it’ll become a classic.

It is indeed mate, Whisky Barrel I think it is, watched some reviews on youtube & it has also been endorsed by a colleague who plays a Tanglewood 👍

I've been needing a new acoustic for a couple of months now. The high E string snaps whenever you get it past B when tuning it. I think there must be something sharp in the bridge or something.

Anyway, I ordered this cheapo electro-acoustic the other night.

It is just for mucking around on but I've read and watched some really good reviews about Harley Benton guitars regarding relative quality for the price. Harley Benton is basically the own-brand of the German music retailer Thomann.
