    NHC: BBC Alba

For those who doubt the value of Alba, they are currently showing a documentary about Stevie Wonder. Tax payers money well spent.

I heard that he failed the test because he saw Leigh's free kick was over the line

Strangely I find myself on Alba quite a bit. But like BBC4. Some really interesting programmes. And I tend to concentrate more with the subtitles!

Alba had a documentary on the Famous 5 not that long ago, not the greatest documentary of all time but was still good to watch. Funny thing is I don't know if Hibs documentaries is what Alba is meant to be there for, I don't think the BBC know what to do with the channel TBH.
That said, I suppose if you want to promote Gaelic to the masses, showing football and rugby is not a bad way of doing it.

Same here. Some of their documentaries at 9pm are really good. Quite like some of their music programmes as well and their football coverage is miles better than BBC Scotland

Waste of money in my opinion. More people speak Urdu than Gaelic in this country but we don't a channel for that language

You don't have to speak Gaelic to watch it, though. As many have said, it has a lot of decent programmes. In many ways, its more relevant to Scotland, and its relationship with the wider world, than BBC Scotland.

That's an argument about why there isn't an Urdu channel then?

Not arguing for that either. Most of their programs could be shown on other BBC channels. I just our licence fee could be spent better

If you turn the sound down its the same as Sportscene and Match of the Day?

English commentators are gushing over mediocre moments in games, and Sportscene just talk utter drivel from both commentators and Pundits!

When you go to a game there is no commentary, so you don't need it to watch on TV, as for atmosphere in Scottish games Sky appear to over dub the crowd noise in Celtic and Rangers games to avoid them getting into bother with some of their chanting????

Does BBC ALBA only have to broadcast programmes to Gaelic speakers about crofting and the clearances then?
English speakers have a wealth of programme subjects to chose from, so why not Gaelic speakers if they so choose...

I like to watch all the programmes with the sound up. It broadens my knowledge of the language.

Is this statistic actually true now? I remember it being trotted out years ago by anti-Gaels when it inconveniently wasn't correct.

Oh, the United Kingdom. That's not quite the point though, is it? I did a bit of checking after my post and it seems, in Scotland, the claim about Urdu remains bogus.

Islam TV Urdu is on Sky 849, it's a freeview channel and shows absolutely no Scottish football. For me at least, this gives me no reason to learn or speak Urdu. Apologies to those who appreciate the language, but it's not for me.
Alba shows Scottish football an shows more Hibs games than it does either Rangers or Celtic. That is something I appreciate and anyone who wants rid of the channel probably also wants to kill Santa's reindeer and they're probably an Orc (this being in no way influenced by watching the Hobbit as I type).

All you Sassenachs who prefer your games in the Saxon tongue can continue to watch the Huns on sky while those of us who prefer the Hibernian tongue will hopefully continue to watch the Hibs (and the rest of the non-weedgie spfl) on Alba.

    Sláinte mhaith
Dave (Teuchter and proud of it).
