All poop is actually beige when it enters the small intestine. It's bilirubin produced by one of the other organs (gall bladder I think) that makes it brown.

He said the monkey was a bracket fixed to the deck with a metal plate fitted into it. The plate had four holes that were big enough to hold the balls securely, but small enough that they could be lifted out easily when needed. They were spaced so that a fifth ball could be perched securely on top but they were never stacked higher than that. When other metals were used the plate would contract in cold weather and the balls would fall off but brass contracts less than other metals so they would only fall off in extreme cold if at all.
He reckoned it was originally called a 'munitions key' (key because of the way it all fitted together) but that was shortened to 'mun key' or monkey.
Anyway, another cannon-related fact:
Humpty Dumpty was believed to be a big cannon that sat high on the ramparts of Warwick Castle (think Mons Meg in Edinburgh). During the English Civil War the wall collapsed under the gun and it fell and shattered. The Royalist army tried to fix it but couldn't.
Hence the nursery rhyme.

There are many sayings that originated from seafaring.
'A balls up'
"A vessel at anchor less than 50mts in length would display a black ball from a prominent position by day or a white all round white at night. This shows other vessels that they should keep clear.
Now I come to the ‘Balls Up’. A vessel not under command, that’s to say, unable to be controlled ie no steerage, no power etc would need to display two black balls. Hence, when a ship was at sea and they lost steerage or power and so were unable to command what the vessel did the sailors would say ‘that’s a Balls Up’ meaning they would need to hoist two black balls to warn other vessels."

Apt fact for the forthcoming Calcutta cup match but it may surprise you to know that England and Scotland have drawn 0-0 more times in Rugby Internationals than they have in football meetings.
