    Sky and other options?

I recently took my Sky and Bt sports out. I was fed up shelling out money because I didn't feel that paying for the basic stuff just to have the right to get sports was fair or fairly priced.

However my situation is that I have saved cash but its catch 22 because i only ever got sky for the sports (at the time i was a single guy, living on my own with a career etc). Now i have my internet and phone with them too. I never use the house phone its just there because i have the line for the net.

Basically is there other options that are cheaper or better value? Could i have proper sports package and decent internet without shelling out what feels like a fortune every month?

I can't get virgin in my area and I'm not a fan of bt as their customer service is awful in my previous experiences.

    Any advice would be welcome.

I recently phoned up and cancelled my Sky TV and Broadband after initial cheap sign up period ended and prices were far too much. If I could have changed to Virgin I would but like you I can't. And also like you i vowed never to go with BT again after awful customer service from them.

Have since contacted Sky and managed to get half price fibre optic broadband for a year - works out same price as I was paying for my crappy normal broadband. Have heard of some folk managing to get free line rental as well.

I'm swithering over whether to get TV back as well - since I cancelled I've had several offers for discounted TV from SKY - the offers get better the longer you hold off.

First offer was 20% off next was 35% off, latest offer was for 50% off tv and sports for a year. Next offer should be 50% plus cash back ( 50 or 100).

If you really want Sky back there is no harm in contacting them on the live chat option. They are desperate to get customers back signed up. Wouldn't entertain an offer of any less than half price - just keep contacting them every so often until you get the offer you want. You might already have an offer if you sign in to your Sky account.

Maybe I should contact Andy Bee though

Any new sky customers (or ones that want to take the risk I their partners name!) Drop me a PM for a brilliant sky Q deal - basically 67% off. Finishes on the 29th so act quick!

I'm having a nightmare with Talk Talk and advise everyone to stay clear. I've been without a phone line and some of my sky channels for 2 weeks now and every time I call up I have to go through the same process of explaining the problem - hardly rocket science when it's a broken phone line - but it's unbelievable how long it takes and how many times they've ****ed it up. The guys in the call centre also seem incapable of logging the problem or deviating from their scripts. I missed the Hibs game on Saturday as a result (OK, so there's people in the world with bigger problems but this is a thread about to options)

Cancelled over the weekend and looking forward to having Sky again. I managed to get land line, Internet and the sports package for 40 per month on the first year and they say you can call up after that runs out and just ask for another promotion.

Yes personal experience tells me to stay away from anything Talk Talk. Internet routers are horse sh*t.

Best advice of give for sky is get in touch approx 31 days before you're term is about to end. Tell them you want to cancel as it's too expensive or a nother reason and you are given you're 31 days notice as part of you're t&c. Now this is the risky but depending on what offers are on at that time it could be worthwhile taking that or carrying on with the cancellation and waiting on the win back team to get in touch however the win back teams are to be brought into line with the retention team shortly in regards to offers etc

Adter chatting with a few different people on here. I called sky and cancelled my to subscription. They then offered me 60% off after about 3 weeks. Also got hd half price and 50 cash back. All done within my 31 day cancellation period so I had no time without tv. I would recommend trying this as it worked out for me.

Just moved into a new place which is set up for Sky TV. Does anyone have access to a Sky Friends and Family code to help out a fellow Hibby? :-)

Does anyone know if the sky sports changes that are coming up next week allow you to come out of a sky contract early?

I renewed for another year quite recently as my box was broken and as it was out of warranty they'd only fix it free of charge if I renewed for another year. I know when prices go up you've then got a window to get out of the contract, not sure if this applies here? The prices aren't going up but what I signed up to is changing now.

Anyone got any update on the Sky trial, where they are using broadband, rather than dishes, for your TV?

Anyone tries to haggle a deal with sky lately. Called up to cancel last week, was offered 20% off which I declined. Checked my online account and was offered 40% off. Thought I would leave it a little longer as last year they changed to 50% discount and some cash back. Checked account this morning and now 30% discount. Have I missed my chance or should I keep waiting.

Wait, let it cancel if you have to. The win back offers are generally excellent.

Has anyone got bt for TV and broadband?

I'm not really arsed about the broadband as I don't use it for anything other than occasional Netflix and for anything else my phones internet connection Is fine.

I'm moving house soon and new place isn't allowed a sky dish, bt seems considerably cheaper than Virgin, if I'm reading it right I think it's about 43 for TV and broadband which gives me bt sport and sky sports an extra 27 a month. The equivalent on virgin is about 100 per month.

Just wondering what the catch is?! Is BT genuinely quite cheap or am I missing something?

I switched from Sky to BT when I moved house back in April. They run off primarily Freeview with some internet based channels - Comedy, Gold, W etc. I honestly don't miss Sky. I've got BT sport which came free, and didn't bother adding on Sky Sports. Scottish football coverage is superior and I generally get one EPL game a week and all of the Champion's League and Europa League as well as the FA Cup.

My box is ultra HD with the capability of recording 2 plus watching a 3rd channel, just as I had with Sky. I also have a2nd box in my bedroom which is ideal for recording programmes on freeview, but it isn't wired to the internet yet so I don't get those channels.

I know you've said the internet isn't a main concern, but I was getting 9MB with Sky, I get 72MB with BT. I would highly recommend them if you aren't all that bothered about the Box Sets and the hundreds of channels you get with Sky.

Brilliant, thanks, sounds like you were in a similar boat to me.

Sorry if this is a daft question but what do you mean internet based channels? If I watch comedy central for example will it be a stream, and therefore relatively unreliable?

Basically, you get all of the Freeview channels with your box through your TV aerial. There are then 50 or so channels that are steamed from your internet, including the BT Sport channels. The box plugs directly into the wifi hub to get these channels. Theoretically, these could be unreliable. Although (touch wood) I've never had any issue in the 4 months with the internet based channels. I'm pretty certain that's the direction Sky are going in with the move to Sky Q and no longer requiring a satellite dish.

You also have the BT player, which is a catch up service and you can rent/buy films on. There's also apps for the likes of Netflix, iPlayer, STV player etc.

I switched from Sky to BT about a year and a half ago as the prices at Sky were getting ridiculous. Switching to BT saved me about 60 - 70 a month.

Had a bit of bother when first setting it up and trying to speak to anyone on the phone is a nightmare as its all offshore call centres but once everything was up and running its been absolutely fine and when my initial offer was up and they were going to start charging me more for the TV package i just phoned and said i was happy to stick with just freeview channels and they took about 30% of the price for another year.

I've got a firestick with Kodi to watch the TV programmes i like that are only on sky channels and the occasional time i will want to watch something that's on sky sports.

My problem with BT is that they didn't do Sky Atlantic. Is that still the case?
