    Waw.
This whole time no one has mentioned the proclaimers?
    Or Travis?
The latter would be my choice
Can't believe no one's mentioned the Fratellis.

Or Runrig, particularly the Donnie Munro era!

Biffy or Idlewild for me too.
Madness, as you know, is a lot like gravity. All it takes is a little push.

I would say the definition of a scottish band is one that formed in Scotland or consists mostly of scots. There are a few that blur that definition of course, like snow patrol for example. Formed in scotland by northern irishmen but always based in scotland and later to include Scottish members. You'd have a tough time arguing that they're Scottish in Belfast or Bangor though
All Scottish band members I would go for Biffy Clyro

    Based on Scottish born members

AC/DC - could say the most successful Scottish band ever due to Angus, Malcolm & Bonn being Scottish born
    Talking Heads - David Byrne
    Primal Scream
    Dire Straits - Knopfler brothers

2nd best Scottish band would be Big Country, the best being Simple Minds......IMHO of course.

Surprised no mention of Glasvegas. James Allen is a bit of a **** but their music is superb.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!"

One of our own, Fish, deserves a mention. The big man is a poet extraordinaire. Marillion's first 4 albums were masterpieces.

I'm guessing that the inference in the thread title is that The Proclaimers take the top spot? If that's the case, then I cast my vote for Belle and Sebastian. Absolutely adore that band.

He said after The Associates although that's not what my choices were based on! Liked some of their stuff but not hugely.

Belle & Sebastian are another matter though...been going all these years and seem to be getting better!

2nd best Scottish band is Edinburgh's own 10.04's, after the glorious Belle & Sebastian.

    Mogwai.

With Belle and Sebastian taking the title as the most underrated. That's not just Scottish either, I mean in general.

Honourable mention for The Vaselines as well.

As some of you know, I am not unbiased when it comes to B & S but I remember an interview Stuart Murdoch gave when Franz Ferdinand (who supported B & S on their UK tour in 2002/3) rocketed to international success with "Take me Out" and their first album in general. Murdoch was asked how he felt about this, given that they had been slogging away for years with limited chart success only to see one of their support bands woosh past them like that. He replied that he was delighted for them, but added "we'll see them at the finish line". And that was a neat summing up, I think. History and posterity will one day judge and value B & S's whole body of work for the enormous achievement that it is.

As grateful as I am and will forever be to you for designing my avatar Peevemor and for our historic bond of .net brotherhood forged in the fires of the Calendar Thread, I regret that this is a step too far.

Will this do as a compromise?
