Disgraceful refereeing to let things go on as long as they did.

Post Watson, Mclellan, Murray and others the well being of the fighters is supposed to be utmost in the referees mind. It wass obvious Blackwell was well beaten on the cards, he was taking a lot of punishment, had 2 or 3 noticeable injuries and was still taking shots. The fight should have been stopped at least 2 rounds earlier.

Agree that the fight should have been stopped sooner, but Blackwells corner should take most of the blame for it going on as long as it did. Although it was clear he wasn't winning the fight fairly early on - Blackwell was still defending and throwing back right to the end.

I switched over to this after the England game. Think it was about round 6 or so and Blackwell's face was covered in blood and seemed to be taking a pounding. I thought blood had to be cleared up immediately?

The ref didn't step in at all and didn't seem concerned at all despite all the blood and endless upper cuts.

It wasn't pretty viewing at all and I thought it should have been stopped within a minute of starting to watch it.

Was the Eubank fight on the same bill as the Brooks fight?

Agree his corner should have stopped it if the ref didn't.

It reminded me a bit of the De La Hoya v Pacquiao fight. One fighter was clearly taking a beating whilst still attempting to defend themselves and throw back, in that instance the ref stepped in after 6 rounds and stopped the fight.

Probably should have been stopped a round sooner but his eye only really started getting that bad in the round before the last, the ref is an experienced ref

It wasn't the eye that worried me it was the constant unanswered head punches he was taking.

Hmm. Blackwell was never down in the fight. Never touched down. Didn't stumble. There wasn't any point that he didn't have his guard up or wasn't able to throw punches. A hard guy putting everything on the line. Taking the punishment and plugging away in defense of his title. It would be a brave ref that stepped in early and took that away from him.

His own corner were best placed to pull him from the fight. The ref did his job.

There's a video doing the rounds of Eubank Snr after round 8 questioning why the ref isn't stopping it. He also tells Jnr to not leave it to the ref and finish it with body shots rather than hitting him on the head again.

Any updated on how the guy is..? Far to brave for his own good.. Agree that his corner should have pulled him after the 8th round.. Fingers crossed for the boy..

Are you seriously denying the amount of relentless punches he took to the head? The guy was getting battered and regardless of his symptoms at the time it was too much, even Eubank Snr recognised that. It went too long and was needless, the ref was poor and should have had the balls to react earlier.

incredible that Eubank Snr was calm enough to spot the danger when the referee wasn't.

It was clearly heard when in the corner, Eubank senior was banging on the canvas with his hand telling the ref to stop the fight, he told his son you won't win the fight hitting him on the head, go for the body, I think Senior was worried about the amount of head punches and uppercuts Blackwell was taking, it was clear his nose was also broken.

Sad end to a great fight.

All reports seem to suggest that Blackwell is going to be ok, thankfully. It's doubtful if he'll ever box again though.

This situation is an example of MMA/UFC being safer than boxing as refs are very quick to stop a fight rather than allow someones brain to be repeatedly dunted with a padded glove.
