Is the outcome of the Davis Cup Final not a mere formality? Andy Murray will win the matches he's involved in and the rest of the team will be making up the numbers.

It doesn't seem quite right somehow that one outstanding player can almost win a supposed team event on his own.

For the credibility of the tournament I hope I'm wrong.

Generally only two of those are 'guaranteed' - doubles is a different game altogether and the big names don't generally make much of an impact.

So you need a team in the sense that you need a good doubles partnership or specialist player and if that doesn't go well you need another player to get something in singles.

Traditionally teams with one strong player haven't done too well.

Jamie Murray is carrying the doubles points and I think at least one of the other singles players won when they weren't expected to for them to have got this far.

Anyway, the credibility of football for example doesn't seem to be hindered when one player makes a sgnificant impact in carrying a team to winning things - Maradona in '86 for example.

Certainly not a formality, the surface is on clay which is Murray's least favourite surface also Goffin is 18 in the World so no pushover. Doubles are a lottery and a completely different game also.

I understand that the Davis Cup is the number 1 international Team event for the game of Tennis. I find it incredulous that GB can only muster one player in the Top 100 yet we find ourselves in the final!

Could it be the case that other Nations simply don't rate the Davis Cup (or possibly the format) as highly as we do?

Having said that, I really hope we win it!

Jamie Murray is a highly ranked doubles player as well though.

So we have a top 3 singles player and top 7 doubles player.

    The other top 10 players in the world have made the following number of appearances in this year's Davis Cup;

Novak Djokovic - 1 out of a possible 4 matches for Serbia. World Group
Andy Murray - 6 out of a possible 6 matches for Great Britain. World Group
Roger Federer - 2 out of a possible 4 matches for Switzerland. World Group
Stan Wawrinka - 1 out of a possible 4 matches for Switzerland. World Group
Rafael Nadal - 1 out of a possible 4 matches for Spain. Europe/Africa Zone Group I
Tomas Berdych - 0 out of a possible 4 matches for Czech Republic. World Group
David Ferrer - 2 out of a possible 4 matches for Spain. Europe/Africa Zone Group I
Kei Nishikori - 4 out of a possible 4 matches for Japan. World Group
Richard Gasquet - 0 out of a possible 4 matches for France. World Group
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - 1 out of a possible 3 matches for France. World Group

It's certainly not rated as highly as the Grand Slams or possibly even the Masters 1000 events by the top players but I think the rise of Britain in the Davis Cup over the last five years is quite remarkable. Yes that is almost entirely down to Andy Murray's decision to turn up for every single tie but the other players have all played their part

If we beat Belgium this weekend, it will be a huge achievement.

Dom Inglot is also highly ranked at doubles.

Goffin was asleep for most of that 1st. Edmund played brilliantly though.

Long way to go in a 5 setter

Edmund and GB up by 2 sets, Goffin just looks like he doesn't want to be there

3-1. Goffin getting a bit more clinical, and errors creeping into Edmund's game.

But one break back and we're back on...

Baws burst for the set 4-1 down, Goffin to serve.

Edmund needs to refocus and give his all in the 5th.

    Edmund looks done
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Enjoyed that, good entertainment. Edmund will learn from that, hopefully he's not too despondent.

That was a lot like watching Andy Murrays early 5 set matches.

They were chatting to Ward earlier and be mentioned he'd be ready to play in a 5th match decider if required. Am I missing something? Will he only be called up if Edmunds gets injured or can Smith still replace Edmunds before Sunday?

He can name whoever he wants from his team that he's selected up to one hour before play begins each day.

Disappointing end to the match for Edmund today. Experience obviously just told in the end.

Good result for Murray which sets things up nicely for the pivotal doubles match tomorrow.

Whoever wins that will win the tie as I can't see Murray losing to Goffin.
