    Hibernian History Day 19

    Season 1893-94

    June, Airdrieonians FC proposed a Second Division and invited Hibs to join.

    17th July, Hibs joined the inaugural Scottish Football Second Division.

    19th August, Hibs played their first league game away to Glasgow Thistle, winning 2-1. Paddy Murray scored Hibs first league goal.

    26th August, Hibs first home league game was played against Morton at Easter Road, Hibs won 9-2

    19th May, Hibs won the inaugural 2nd Division League after a 10-1 win over Port Glasgow Athletic. There was no automatic promotion. (Airdrieonians did not take part in the League).

    There was no promotion. You had to be elected to gain entry to the first division. A small snippet, we are the only club that has won successive championships in the top and second divisions.

    I was always led to believe that our 1894 case for promotion was vetoed by Celtic and their strong influence at the SFA. They didn't want another "Irish" club in the top flight and lobbied for Hibs not to come up no doubt getting their pals from Govan to follow suit in the voting.
