Thread: Pet Peeves IV

  1. #7801
People repeating a name multiple times throughout when writing a letter, a particularly common trait among celebrities writing open letters.

Boris I ask you, Boris I implore, Boris please, Boris please consider, Boris you must.....

    Unnecessary and grating.

People who pronounce "statistics" as "stastistics".

And far worse, "pacific" instead of "specific".

Totally agree, that grinds my gears

and whenever anyone writes/types ‘should of’, rather than ‘should have’ or ‘should’ve’

The site should have a system, like it does for sweary words, where offensive words like laxadaisical are replaced by a string of asterixes.

It's being discussed in the Coronavirus thread, but I think it's better placed here.
Something which is really annoying me at the moment is people leaving rubbish everywhere.
Holyrood Park and the Meadows are two of my favourite spots in Edinburgh, but the recent hot weather has ld to crowds leaving their rubbish everywhere. It's also been highlighted as a problem down South and pictures from Bournemouth beach made me gag.

Just take a photo of any bit of litter you see and post it on Facebook. That's what people here seem to be doing any time they see a carelessly discarded surgical mask, so it must help.

People who have great difficulty in abiding by simple rules and directional signage and then proceed to argue the point when it’s politely pointed out to them. Sometimes to the point where they obstruct or hold other folk up while they pointlessly try to argue their case.

Worse is that it's now creeping into spoken form. Mikey Stewart is brutal for it. "Should've" is fine, but he splits the words up to "should of".

TV shows or movies where the dialogue is quiet but the music is blasting.

This really grips my **** too. I was at the Baltic last weekend and at the entrance to the campsite where I was staying there's a sign that clearly states that people should park their vehicles on the carpark opposite whilst checking in. However some dickheads either couldn't read or couldn't be bothered walking the extra 15m and as a consequence entering and exiting the campsite got blocked for 20 minutes at a time. Why the campsite don't police their own rules is another story.

Bookies adverts: "Always gamble sensibly". Aye right! If everyone gambled sensibly they'd be ruined.

Getting asked for help with something only for the person asking for help to disagree with all the things you suggest to help, and then they get arsey about it.

Don’t get married, is the key message here.

"In any way, shape or form"

It doesn't make you sound serious or clever. It makes you sound like you're trying to sound serious and clever. "In any way" would do.

Sadly not relevant to me anymore but there were a few when I played fives. Guys who would regularly pull out at the last minute, lads who never seemed to have the cash to pay, the ones who would always try to dodge a shot in goals....etc. etc.

People wearing face masks around their neck/ chins in shops etc. Either wear the face mask properly or don’t wear one at all, this wearing one for effect without actually using it properly is pointless.

Folk who post links with no context or comment. There must be a reason why you've chosen to share it with others in a public forum, would it kill you to give us a sentence or two so we can decide if it's worth clicking on?
