    Rap / Hip-Hop

Hi folks, I used to listen to Rap music growing up - The Game, Eminem, Rick Ross, Kanye West etc. and I wondered if fellow .netters listen to Rap Hip Hop?

I've just ordered Rick Ross' Mastermind.

    Any recommendations would be welcomed

Nothing beasts the late 80s early 90s stuff like NWA, Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, Run DMc, Beasties, Boogie Down Productions, Stetsasonic etc. Really can't abide the current stuff.

Being an old fart, this rap stuff is generally all Tom Kite to me however, to prove that I'm not all bad here's a few songs that I did enjoy from that type of genre....

Dre 2001 imo is the best rap album. I liked 2pac, old snoop, Eminem first 2 albums. NWA and biggie. Hate this genre of music now though

I had similar tastes to the OP growing up and love listening to that stuff now. In terms of newer stuff, I'd recommend:

Drake ft. The Weekend - The Ride

My favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist at the moment - he has three studio albums released so far and all three are a little bit special IMHO. The link above is a fairly simple song of his, but probably illustrates the type of artist he is.

Chris Brown & Tyga - Ayo

Like him or loathe him, Chris Brown makes good music. This one is catchy, as is "Post to Be" which he recently released with Omarion and Jhene Aiko.

    Azealia Banks & Lazy Jay - 212

This was out a few years ago and is catchy - her album never really grabbed me, probably because each song is so different.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist (Full Album)

Love this album. Some great tunes on it.

Also honourable mentions for the likes of Jay-z, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Plan B and Devlin.

This genre of music seems to give pasty faced kids the idea that they can talk like gangstas from the projects! Very strange, particularly in the London area.

In the early nineties there was a term for such peeps, "Wiggers".

My own musical taste is all over the place and I like the old East Coast/West Coast battles that went down 15/20 years ago.

To highlight my messed up likings, check out

Eminem is my all time favourite artist, he's an absolute genius. I have pretty much every single song of his on my ipod.

The lyrical content of "Stan", as an example, is simply brilliant.

I'm not a huge rap fan in general but I love Eminem.

The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show are outstanding albums.

Hip hop isn't my favourite genre but the following artists have released albums recently which I've really got into. A wee bit different from your mainstream stuff.

    Death grips http://youtu.be/uqcTVVUFnKQ

Cypress Hill, Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr Dre, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan and NWA are probably my favourites .

I'd even chuck Transplants in there and give a mention to Yelawolf who just released his latest album. Absolutely cracking listen.

Another couple I listen to are Wiz Khalifa and MGK.

Not many rappers I'm really into now, Rick Ross still sounds good but too many songs are laced with a predictable hook.

Yep, got to see Akil solo a few years back, he was brilliant. Whenever I am on a long journey I usually slap on J5 and zone out.

Rarely listen to hip hop anymore but the nah - illmatic documentary is worth a watch. He was excellent at the picture house a few years ago when he played with a live band

Deltron 3030 are amazing. Saw them at Glasto last year on the same day as I also saw De La Soul and Jurassic 5 and they were all ace.

Agreed, Ice-t's the art of rap and Michael Rappaport's beats, rhymes and life about atcq is also good.

The blackstarr album by now def and talib kweli is brilliant as is quality by talib kweli and black on both sides by mos def.

Extinction level event by busta rhymes has some great songs.

Drop by the pharcyde has to be top ten.

As mentioned, cypress hills first three albums are all classics.

Let's get free by dead prez is potentially the best hip hop album of all time, between that and illmatic imo.

Surprised there's not been much love for gangstarr, GURU is amongst the best ever mcs and premier is a great producer.

For those worried about the current standard, check out the new public enemy, the new pharaoh monch, immortal technique or run the jewels. There's plenty out there if you look for it

In addition to the above, the first two xzibit albums (at the speed of life and 40 days and 40 nights) were great showcases for a fantastic lyricist. It's a shame Dr dre ruined him.

Also morrisey... I often wonder how I can love hip hop and the smiths, fairly certain mozza would be disgusted...
