Thread: 2014 US Open

Unfortunate ending to the first women's semi final earlier tonight as Peng Shuai retired from the match and had to leave the court in a wheelchair.

She was losing 6-7 3-4 to Caroline Wozniacki when she called for a medical timeout and left the court for a few minutes after appearing to be in a lot of discomfort. She came back and played a few points before collapsing to the ground and, after a few minutes, she was eventually helped up into a wheelchair and taken off court as Wozniacki was announced the winner.

    Hope she's ok.

Wozniacki will play either Serena Williams or Ekaterina Makarova in Sunday's final. They are playing at the moment and Serena has just taken the first set 6-1.

Caroline Wozniacki will play Serena Williams in the women's final on Sunday after Serena beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-1 6-3 in exactly one hour.

It looked like being a lot quicker than that as Serena lead 6-1 4-0 at one point before Makarova made a brief comeback but Serena eventually came through to reach her eighth US Open final and her 22nd Grand Slam final overall.

Considering the first semi was cut short and the second one lasted only an hour, I wouldn't have been best pleased if I had tickets for Arthur Ashe Stadium today!

Kei Nishikori takes the opening set 6-4. Should be a good match!

    Potential five setter here.

Djokovic levels things up by winning the second set 6-1.

It's a best of three sets match now.

Nishikori wins a fantastic set of tennis in a tiebreak and is one set from the final.

    This is great entertainment.

Nishikori wins 6-4 1-6 7-6 6-3 and reaches his first ever Grand Slam final.

    Great performance.

    What a performance.

Djokovic looked dead on his feet at the end. Think Nishikori played a smarter game in the conditions.

Nishikori was fantastic today. That forehand of his is some weapon.

He really should be in the top four or five.

I thought Djokovic was going to win that third set when he broke Nishikori when he was serving for the set at 5-3 but give Nishikori his due, he withstood the pressure and looked comfortable in the end.

Quite impressive on the back of playing two five-setters in the past five days as well.

Unfortunately the second semi final is on hold as it's currently chucking it down in New York.

Marin Cilic takes the opening set 6-3 and is also a break up early in the second set.

Cilic takes the second set 6-4.

Looks like being the first Grand Slam final not to contain any of the "Big Four" since the 2005 Australian Open.

    Wow!

What a great performance there by Marin Cilic.

He totally destroyed Roger Federer in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Federer never had a look in at any point in that match.

    Completely deserved that.

Massive well done to Britain's Jordanne Whiley as well.

Just seen that she and her doubles partner have won the US Open women's wheelchair doubles title and have therefore completed the Grand Slam by winning all four titles in 2014.

Strange seeing someone on the TV who you've actually met!

Serena Williams wins her 18th Grand Slam title after beating Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3.

She's now tied with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert in the all time list in the Open Era.

Only Steffi Graf has won more titles in the Open Era.

Men's final started about 15 minutes ago if anyone's interested.

It's all square after four games.

    First set to Cilic, 6-3.

  17. #46
Cilic takes the second set 6-3 and is one set away from lifting his first major.

He's totally outplaying Nishikori so far.

Marin Cilic wins the US Open, beating Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-3 6-3.

Cilic becomes just the eighth men's Grand Slam champion in the last ten years and is the first Croatian male to win a Grand Slam since his coach Goran Ivanisevic won Wimbledon in 2001.
