Davis Cup - GB v Italy

Britain play their first Davis Cup quarter final this weekend against Italy.

With Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi both playing singles for Italy, it's going to be a tough one for GB to win, especially with it being on clay.

The weather in Naples is terrible just now so the start of the tie has been delayed and they reckon they may not get both singles matches played today.

When play does begin, match number one sees Fognini play James Ward followed by Seppi against Andy Murray.

Britain lost the first rubber as Fabio Fognini beat James Ward in 4 sets. It wasn't one way traffic at all though. Ward was a set all and very close to going a break up in the fourth set before he eventually lost the set and subsequently the match.

In the second rubber, Andy Murray is close to going two sets up against Andreas Seppi but the match was stopped at 5-5 in the second set due to bad light.

Murray returns at 9:30am tomorrow to finish his singles match and he may then be chosen to play in the doubles later on tomorrow as well.

If Murray can finish the job off against Seppi, it will really all come down to the doubles as I would expect Murray to beat Fognini on Sunday and for Seppi to beat Ward.

    Should be a good weekend.

Another great day of Davis Cup action for GB as Murray completed his match from last night, beating Andreas Seppi in straight sets.

Then in the doubles, Andy Murray returned to the court alongside Colin Fleming to win in four sets against Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.

That win means that GB need to win just one of the two singles matches on Sunday to reach their first semi final in the Davis Cup since 1981.

Andy Murray is first on court against Fabio Fognini at 10:30am BST tomorrow.

Should GB win, they'll play the winner of the Switzerland-Kazakhstan tie.

Kazakhstan's currently 2-1 up going into the last day's play.

If Switzerland win, the tie will definitely take place in the UK but if Kazakhstan win, the home nation will be decided by drawing lots.

Murray loses 5 games in a row and loses the first set 6-3.

    Not looking great right now.

    Horrible performance by Murray.

Fognini goes two sets up after winning the second set 6-3.

Think that's the tie done and dusted now.

    Fognini wins 6-3 6-3 6-4.

    Murray totally outclassed.

2-2 in the tie and it all goes down to the final rubber - James Ward vs Andreas Seppi.

Can't see anything other than an Italian victory.

Seppi two sets up on Ward.

    Pretty much all over now.

  10. #9
Seppi wins in straight sets and Italy win the tie 3-2.

Predictable outcome after Murray's defeat earlier.
