Just put the DVD on, never watched it before. Worth persevering with?

It's well worth watching.
And if you're still in the mood for serial killers when you've watched that, get a hold of the Michael Mann production of "Manhunter" from 1986.
Based on the book "Red Dragon", starring William Petersen, Kim Greist, Tom Noonan, Dennis Farina, and Joan Allen, with Brian Cox as Lector.

There's one scene late in the film involving Noonan and Joan Allen that always creeps me right out.
A genuine unsung classic IMHO.
