I have been researching my family tree for about two years now. It has become an obsession. If you have the time you'd find it a very rewarding bit of research to do yourself. I have managed to trace back three hundred years for both paternal and maternal lines.

Some family records are free if you know where to look and you have some good details to begin with.
http://www.familysearch.org is a good place to start, you may even find someone else has already posted a family tree that link with yours.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Scotlands records can be searched and viewed here, but it can be very pricey. If you choose to use it give me a PM and I can give a few tips for getting the most out of it.

Lots of records can also be accessed through sites that you subscribe to. I use one of these and have accessed hundreds of records which have given great insight into the family history.

There is a very good site which you can get a 14 day free trial, Ancestery.co.uk, If your Dad can use and has access to the internet a subscription could be a great pressie! It could turn it a father and son hobby!

They are only looking at 1855 on, in family history terms its a search which can be done very cheap, quick and easily. If your dad knows his parents and any grandparents birth, marriage or death details, I would estimate it would not cost more than £30 to access and view the records online at Scotlands People.
If you go on their site it gives you loads of info., you can book a seven hour search at ScotlandsPeople centre (General Register House) for a tenner! Another good pressie.

If you have time you could easily put a tree together, there's loads of free resources out there.
