I'm sure Steve Jones, Paul Cook and John Lydon will miss him like a hole in the head.

The man gave us Sir John Lydon as his legacy. Never seen the Pistols but saw PIL a couple of times. (Greatful smilie.)Last edited by Hillsidehibby; 09-04-2010 at 12:02 PM.

A genius for self publicity. I think it's hilarious that McClaren is getting all the credit for punk rock. It was already happening and he just managed to get the press.
He certainly had no feeling for the ideals of what punk was about. He kind of makes me think about the guy who managed the Who (was it Pete Meaden?) He saw that a lot of kids were into the mod scene, so he constructed a band that would serve that market.
I think Lydon was always one step ahead of McClaren, and Malcolm tried to make out that he'd planned the thing all along. In fact McClaren didn't have a clue what was going on at all.
Watch the Great Rock n Roll Swindle and it's cringeworthy how Malcs tries to piece everything together like it was some master plan.

I've got a wee bit of time for what came later, but I think they missed the whole point of punk. In a sense they were conformists because they were following a trail that had already been made.

Watched the New York Dolls last night. Bob Harris called them "mock rock", I can finally see his point.

I'm not sure that gives him a great deal more credit, but ho-hum.

don't think punk rock was as "spontaneous" as it was made out to be. Ok the kids were screaming out for something new but most of the performers were accomplished musicians who had played the "crap" they were supposed to be rebelling against. That's why it was a swindle.
