I do think sometimes England are over cautious and want to make sure they dont get beat rather than win a test - but I agree with England batting again - gives the bowlers a rest - as was said Stokes and Anderson just back from injury - also tires out the Pakistan team physically by keeping them in the field for another few overs and will hurt them mentally as well.
I stand corrected. :applause:
Cook now has a very good century, Root and Hales equally good half-centuries. 173-1.
Three happy batsmen, and now the bowlers are having fun.
Pakistan sinking like the Titanic.
Hope Stokes recovers for the Third Test. Maybe his injury was behind Cook's decision to bat again? Give him every chance to recover?
Pakistan 163-6, Michelle McManus getting ready for a song! :-)
A joy to watch. As I've posted before he is so technically correct in almost everything he does and still has time for a flamboyant stroke or two. He is up alongside Bell, Hick (until the WI pace attack destroyed him) and KP as the batsmen I've enjoyed most watching playing for England over the last few years. (All very good fielders too).
He has the capacity to play for two days and give no chances. And unlike some, he can play in a Test match, make his hundred, then turn out in a T20, blitz a lightning 50, then turn in a solid innings in a 50-over ODI and back to Test cricket and another hundred.
He's a perfect example of how all the different forms of the game can positively feed off one another. I'm becoming a bit of a groupie, TBH.
OOPS! 8 gone. Michelle better tune up quick ....
All over. Terrific performance, and JR even takes a wicket?
Is there no end to this young man's versatility? :greengrin
I've been out and about since lunch, who got the MOTM? ;-)
You have to ask?
Joe Root. Spoke very well at the presentation - not just a great batsman, a very decent young guy. I don't like the expression, but a very fine role-model for young cricketers.
I have to say that that was one of the finest innings I've ever seen in Test cricket. They never looked like getting him out - it was only when he started to push on at the end that he was caught out. And then 71 off 48 balls in the second innings. Very impressive.
Just wanted to give you another chance to wax lyrical.
That's why I love Test cricket.
But I have to say I'm beginning to see the point of T20. Old Tom Lord and WG would have loved it. So much razzamatazz, so many pretty cheerleaders, so many opportunities for corruptive wagering and manipulation of the media.
It's truly Victorian, in every sense of the word ....
Pakistan make early inroads at Edgbaston, England 80-3, Hales, Root and Cook gone.
Good days cricket, nip and tuck. Eng 286-9
Well, he got one. I rather like him - he has a nice style about him. Good day's cricket yesterday and well done Sohail on his five-for.
In another place ... Terrific rearguard action by West Indies in Kingston with Roston Chase the first West Indian to score a century - 137 n.o. - and take five wickets in a Test for the Windies for 50 years.
Some bloke called Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers did it 50 years ago almost to the day at Headingley against England. England lost by an innings and 55, which led to accusations in the patriotic (read, racist) press of the day that Wes Hall was 'chucking'.
Pakistan 257-3. A wicket with the 4th ball of the first over, a wicket with the last ball of the day and a run out in between. Attritional viewing today or old school test match cricket? Take your pick.
England have been guilty of bowling too short quite frequently over the past few years and did the same for most of yesterday, did they not learn from the length Pakistan bowled on Wed? I thought Anderson's behaviour was embarassing yesterday, it just wasn't cricket! :-)
Pakistan 274-4.
296-5
367-7
374-8. Lead for Pakistan but not s much as it might have been
Fine display of batting by England yesterday, struggling to see past a draw unless the pitch falls to bits.
The pitch seems to be helping the batting side as the match goes on, that could easily change though.
