London Hibs AGM Newsletter

Same Old Story - But a New Face

Welcome to this edition of the London Hibs Newsletter. At the controls is the ‘new boy on the block’ - Jim Jeffries, hot from Hearts training camp at Edinburgh Airport (familiarising themselves with the ‘Arrivals’ lounge after an unfamiliar speedy exit from the UEFA Cup preliminary rounds !!).

Seriously, Craig Bennison took leave of his senses at the AGM on Saturday 24th June 2000 and offered his services as club secretary; taking over from the club stalwart, Mike McSherry. Mike, after many years performing the ‘back-bone’ position of the club decided that he wanted to spend more time looking for a replacement for .............. ‘Dirk Lehman’ and has stepped down as club secretary.

I hope this and every edition brings you the same amount of information, views and comment on the club that we love, whilst adding my own edge to the proceedings.

I would welcome your views and comments as this is YOUR newsletter.

Finally at this point I think it is only right and proper to ask you all to join me in thanking Mike for the sterling work that he has done to make our supporters club what it is today - THANK YOU, MIKE !!

‘Player of The Year’ (POTY)

Here comes the first date for your diary ......... the 11th November 2000. As the fixture list has now been posted on every fans mind, this date is the home game against Kilmarnock. Following on from last years complete success the award ceremony will take the format of an evening function in the Forthview suite, with a disco, players past and present not to mention the Award itself.

‘The Award Winner’

With votes cast and signing on fees in the bank, there was much fear that Kenny ‘The Hun’ Miller would be lifting the ‘POTY’ crown. However, in Eric Morley (Miss World fame) fashion, I can reveal, in reverse order, the winner and losers :

                                    5th place    Yogi

                                    4th place    Colgan

                                    3rd place    K Miller

                                    2nd place    Russell Latapy

                                    1st place    Franck Sauzee

‘2nd Date for Your Diary’

Not only do I come with news of one social event but yes.....another ...... The date for the Burns Supper has been confirmed as the 20th January 2001. The venue will be as last year at Kavanagh’s in Kensington - so again get your friends and family ready for thee shindig of all shindigs !!!

‘AGM Business’

1. Finances : Andrew Murray gave a thorough expose of the club’s finances. The essentials of this expose are that the club turnover is up thus allowing us to give more money to Hibs, which is exactly what our club is all about.

2. Membership : Subscriptions are to remain at £10-00 (ten pounds) and continue to offer great value for money. As if you need reminding, what you get for this sum is a monthly newsletter; access to the clubs season tickets for Easter Road; friendly likeminded fans full of passion for their club; a top supporters club football team; Predict the Score Competition, the POTY and Burns Supper for a slight additional charge.

Membership is now due and for you to benefit from our club your subs should be paid to our lovely treasurer ASAP - after all you don’t want to be the ‘Aberdeen’ of our supporters club - COME ON - PAY TODAY !!

Family Membership : Family membership is still available and offers excellent value for money. The cost of this type of membership is £10-00 for the first name, with an extra £5-00 for a second name and £2-50 for any names thereafter. (e.g. a family membership for 2 adults and 2 children will cost      £20-00 = £10-00, £5-00, £2-50, £2-50)

Club Season Tickets : It was decided that the cost of using these tickets, which was currently £5-00 would be raised to £10-00 to start at the beginning of the forthcoming season. HOLD ON : as each game is likely to cost at least £18-00 this season and may even reach £20-00 this new cost is still going to offer at least £8-00 of saving to each member and covers the £10-00 fee in one go !! So, in the words of Nicholas Parsons (for those old enough to remember) ‘Its Sale of The Century Time !!)

3. Mike McSherry : As previously mentioned, Mike has stepped down but not away from his committee role at LHSC. This has left a void in the fanzine department, although Rose McEwan has kindly offered her services and of course I am typing furiously. If anyone would like to add to the growing band of trojans, then please volunteer !!

‘Scottish Fitba Net’

A new Scottish football internet site is soon to be launched with links to other football sites. It was proposed we entered the site and this motion was carried. Don’t worry, our London Hibs identity will be retained and this will allow us to be even more recognised by even more visitors. Amongst other features, this site will provide us with eCommerce facilities to sell our merchandise alongside the official Hibs offerings, access to an enormous database of photos, information, etc. and much, much more!! - Watch this space!!

‘New Hibs CD’

Mike Inglis has produced a great CD containing Hibs songs, speeches from the Y2K Burns supper, including the famous speech of ‘Eddie Turnbull’ and lots, lots more - For £5-00, its yours so come and see Mike and have a unique, limited edition piece of Hibernian Memorabilia!!

‘Hibs Framed Programme’ (as presented by Eddie Turnbull to LHSC)

For those of you who were at the Burns Supper, Eddie Turnbull (yes, the one and only) presented two framed Hibs - Tottenham - Hibs programmes. What a prize !! I hear you say. However, the item will be raffled at the September meeting of LHSC. However, only those members who have paid up their subscriptions by 31st August 2000, will be entered into the raffle - so as before ‘PAY TODAY AND PLAY’

‘Australian Hibs signed Jersey raffle’

Andrew Murray has kindly obtained a signed jersey from the Australian Hibs Supporters Branch. This will be raffled at the POTY in Edinburgh and will be by signed £5-00 notes only. Any person not intending to travel to the POTY can send their signed fivers to Andrew, who assures us they will make the raffle ! (David Duff eat your heart out !!)

‘Erin Community Trust’

Dave McBain is offering advice and answers to your queries on this direct way of helping our club. As a supporters branch we have decided that a members vote should take place before we join such. Therefore, your attendance would be greatly appreciated at the September meeting as not only may you win the ‘programmes’ but you may wish to vote; This is a useful and valuable way of giving money directly to the manager’s pocket via trustees who are supporters; WANT TO KNOW MORE, then speak to Dave !!

‘Ireland Trip’

Andy Bell has done a fantastic job organising this ‘weekender’ to the emerald isle. Why not join Andy, me and others on this Hibs Fans Trip of a lifetime to see where our club began ? Or why not come along for drink, sports and a weekend away from the partner !! For further details contact Andy Bell, but you better be quick we fly out on the 4th of August 2000.

‘Next Meeting’

The next official meeting will be at the William Wallace Pub on Tuesday 8th August 2000. BE AWARE : The William Wallace is moving to 33 Aybrook Street which is just around the corner from where the Pub is now, so DON’T BE A STRANGER !!

‘25 Years and now time for a newer model’

A regular feature of this newsletter will be the ‘Jimmy Boco’ Award for outstanding dedication to Hibernian. Each month I would like you to write in with the names and brief stories of people you think have shown outstanding dedication to Hibernian, whether it be travelling to Stranraer for a tanking or eating Kebabs in Gorgie, please let me know and I’ll print your story !!

Mike Hennesey wins the inaugural ‘Jimmy Boco’ award. Despite the fact that his 25th Wedding anniversary fell on our AGM, Mike was not to be undone. He sent his beloved wife off to the Victoria & Albert Museum, probably in the hope that she would find a new model, (only kidding !!) whilst he leant his ever present support to our proceedings - Congratulations on your silverware and on being the first proud recipient of the ‘Jimmy Boco’ Award.

Last but not least ......

Calling all you bargain hunters !!! - Forget Mohamed Al Fayed at Harrods or even the famous Debenhams Blue Cross Sale - Alex Lyndsey has got the ‘sale of the century’.

            -            9 holes of golf

            -           lunch

            -            9 holes of golf
