With the farcical League Cup semis a big topic of conversation at the moment it's got me thinking about our pink neighbours long drought in the tournament. What world events have occurred since they last won the competition? I'll start..

Moon landing
England win World Cup
JFK assassinated
The Rolling Stones had their first No 1
Fall of the Berlin wall
Apartheid abolished

Any others?

When Hearts last won the league cup, there had been no James Bond films released (Dr No was released later in 1962)

In the interim period, Hearts have once or twice overspent the Moneypennies though

Apart from losing a derby 00-7 and apart from failing to win the LC with Hearts, manager Jim Jefferies did also do an Oddjob at Killie, losing 1-5 to Hibs in the 2007 final, backed up by Gary Goldeneye Locke & Billy Quantum of Solace Brown (a man who has been places and done hings)

Hibs previous win in the tournament, a 2-0 win v Dunfermline in 1991, crowned The Team That Never Died, though until the penalty sealed matters we nearly grabbed defeat from the Jaws of victory

Hibs of course also beat Celtic 2-1 to win the league cup in the seventies as well, around the time Live & Let Die was in picture houses; a movie where Bond famously destroys a poppy crop, in a clear artistic reference towards the Vlad and Rodney Romanov show that would visit Tynecastle in the years to come.

Hearts have had many comedy moments in the competition, even losing to Airdrie's "Diamonds are Forever" team of 2008, on pens, at Tynecastle, even though Airdrie were down to 10 men: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_cups/7581433.stm

A personal favourite was Ian Cathro, being forced to watch his team take a penalty shootout after a draw against Dunfermline, even though Hearts had already been eliminated...the first recorded penalty shootout in a competitive fixture where nothing was at stake. Hearts lost.

For all the bleating they like to do about being more successful, only teenagers or those over the age of 56 have actually witnessed them lift more trophies. Anyone else has only even known Hibs winning more silverware in their lifetime, or equal.
