Since just about everything we do these days requires a password or a pin number, maybe you are like me and are suffering from password overload. Many of the things I need to access require me to change the password on a regular basis and won't allow me to re-use a previous one, so I am constantly having to dream up new ones and my capacity to remember them all is suffering.

Something I use quite a lot now is the names of motorbikes I currently own, or have owned, in the past, as they are usually a good combination of letters and numbers. But even with those I regularly confuse them and feels like I spend forever trying different combinations.

Without giving any of your own favourites away do you have any tips or tricks for remembering passwords.

Find a good complex password ending in a number and change the number when required. My main one needs changed every 60 days and can't use last 5. Works great for me.

Use addresses of places that mean something to you. e.g. 197highstreet

I have a random set of 8 letters (was actually an original Blueyonder-now Virgin-email password. 2 of the letters can be changed to password safe characters ( a=@, e=€, l=£, s=$, c=¢ etc) and I have 2 numbers at the end. The password starts with a capital, has special characters and the number at the end increments by 1 each time it's required.
It is not advisable to have the same password for every application and that was reinforced with Twitter password being visible as plain text to some last week,,,, I'll take my chances though!

I use a password storage app. My password was the same for everything up until fairly recently. I now change it to something different as I don’t need to remember them anymore.

Sounds handy, but hang on do you need a password to keep the app secure?

I use the date of when we last beat Hearts and find it changes often enough to satisfy most systems.

Typically just the one secure password and everything else is taken care of.

Hmmm not sure I fancy having my passwords documented in one place.

Use a password generator where it can be randomised and changed every log in. Most browsers have extensions you can download for this.

Years ago I had a password that had to be changed regularly (RBS 'Royline' - does anyone remember that?) I used Hibs players names & shirt numbers.

Another way that's easy to remember is song lyric initials with the odd capital letter & character substitution, eg. Glory Glory would be Tiabft@ERtp.

I use 3 different choices

I often use the area of a house I've previously lived in with the house number at the end.
Or
Worldwide favourite football players with their jersey numbers. And last but not least, close relatives Christian names with the birth year at the end.

That thought did cross my mind. I don’t have my banking ones on there, just in case.

On topic, I've heard good things about password storage sites if people are concerned about remembering theirs.

I always use the year Pope Gregory the 9th canonized Saint Dominic. Nobody would think of that.
