In the past I have thrown away anything battery operated where the batteries have leaked-corroded and the terminals of the device have become covered in a crust of battery acid type stuff. Just had the same happen with my son's tv remote. I decided to Google a remedy and discovered vinegar on a cotton wool bud cleans all the crap off and remote now works perfect.

Any other handy tips?

If you get your shoes or boots wet and you don't want them to stink, stick a teabag in each one as you dry them out. I don't know how it works but it keeps that rank wet shoe smell at bay (has done wonders for my golf shoes in particular).

I did just that on my holiday last week. It’s one of these things that seems so blatantly obvious that I can’t believe I never thought of it before. The only reason I did it was because on my previous holiday the room didn’t have enough sockets. I had plenty travel adapters, but they were no use to me. We had two phones two iPads and a couple of other things to charge. No problem with a four plug adapter.

If you can't get a metal lid off a jar run it under the hot tap for a few seconds. The metal expands and makes it much easier to move.

Likewise, if you've got stacked glasses jammed together put ice cubes or cold water in the top one and dip the bottom one in fairly hot water (not too hot or it might crack).

When cooking bacon, sausages or black pudding etc under the grill put some water in your grill pan, just enough to cover the surface of it. This stops all the fat that drips off the meat during cooking burning in the bottom of the grill pan. When you've finished cooking just pour it away and rinse the grill pan.

to avoid the bacon twisting during cooking, snip through the fat on the outside edge of the bacon, every centimetre or so, the length of the rasher.
The fat contracts when cooking and pulls the meat together. Snipping stops this, and keeps the fat (and flavour) intact.

Perfect for rolls and butties, plus no more stringy bacon.

I've used this for years, makes life so much easier considering most folk have a phone each, electric tooth brush, kindle, hair dryer/straighteners, MIG welder etc.

As long as you don't go crazy and plug in all the huge wattage appliances at once you'll be good, 4 mobile phone chargers won't draw that much!

If you have pots or pans with burnt on bits that won’t come off even after soaking, pour water in the pot, put it on the hob and bring to the boil, when it reaches the boil, put some bicarbonate of soda into it and immediately turn the heat down to between a simmer and boil (you will need to do this as the water will rise after the bicarbonate goes in) and keep it like this for a few minutes. The burnt on bits will lift off.

If you live in Edinburgh (or EH postcode area I think) get yourself a Library card.
Gives you access to loads of online material for FREE.
Best one, and what I use regularly, is access to most UK daily newspapers and a whole host of weekly, monthly magazines covering many subjects. These are accessed via a couple of Apps - PressReader and/or RBDigital.

Here’s a link to get you started for those in Edinburgh.

Even if you’re not in Edinburgh area, pretty sure other local councils provide a similar service, so might be worth looking up your Council’s website to check.

Discovered the other day that freezing then defrosting butter makes it much more spreadable.

Is this common knowledge?!

If you buy new bars of soap take them out of the wrapper and store in a cold place. They'll last longer.
Ye'll not regret it.

How much longer do you want a bar of soap to last 🤔

Edit: are you suggesting some people only buy used/second hand bars of soap?
I'm intrigued.

This made me laugh way more than it should have. I'm away to get some of my old soap listed on eBay. Could be a proper earner 🤣

It probably will be. You hear about all these folk that make a fortune selling their hair/pants/nail clippings

I walked past a guy in the street once who asked if he could buy my shoes off me. They were destroyed so if I was closer to home I’d have happily sold them to him and he could have chugged himself into oblivion all he wanted. Unfortunately it was raining and I was about a half hour walk away :greengrin
