Best of luck to your mate!

I've experienced alcoholism in my own family and lost relatives to it through either terminal abuse or in one case they decided to "check-out" on their own terms.

I myself am currently going through a self enforced dry spell just now after I was advised by medical professionals to moderate my drinking. Apparently I have developed a tolerance to alcohol so was drinking more and more alcohol without getting the effect. Obviously this couldn't go on without without there being an adverse affect to my health somewhere down the line.
I'm not daft and know there are there's only so much a person can drink without causing harm but I'd never had a hangover for years, even though I was drinking bottles of wine (yes, bottles) on top of pints!!! I was drinking most days of the week and still working away with no ill effect, even strolling through the random tox-screenings.
After seeing a specialist re stress/anxiety my lifestyle was looked in to and although not directly connected, they were quite frankly shocked with my average alcohol consumption. The good news is all the tests I've had indicate I've not done myself any damage, think my Dr was actually surprised (maybe even disappointed as she didn't half get preachy!).

So, 5 weeks aff it, not a sniff. I'm still going out but sticking to 0% beer or sparkling water. The first 2 weeks were a little tough, I caught myself dreaming about a glass of red wine one night but recently it's been plain sailing. I'm not worried about the upcoming festive period as I've elected to work through it even though those around me assure me this is the WORST time of year to give up the sauce.
In the short term I'm planning a few months dry, then we'll see what happens. I'd like to think I could go back to beers after work on a Friday and maybe a Saturday night drink but who knows,,,,
