Season 1909-10

18th August, Hibs played Dundee Hibernian at the opening of their ground at Tannadice, because of the clash in kit, Hibs had to borrow strips from Leith Athletic and played in black and white hoops. The game ended 1-1.

25th December, Hibs played Partick Thistle at Firhill. In the game, Hibs 23 year old right-back, James Main, was injured when he was kicked in the stomach by a Thistle player who had slipped on the icy surface. The young Scottish Internationalist was carried off but was able to return home after the game, however he was later rushed to the Royal Infirmary when the extent of his internal injuries were realised (a ruptured spleen). An emergency operation was initially successful however James never recovered and died on the 29th December.

19th February, a third round Scottish Cup home tie against Hearts was abandoned after 35 minutes when some of the 30,000 spectators encroached onto the field of play; Hearts were leading 1-0. Hibs won the replay at Tynecastle 1-0 with Peggie scoring in front of 25,000 spectators.

I'm enjoying these wee season snapshots, thanks !

I'd forgotten about our role in inspiring the Dundee greens, although I recall they wore a green away strip in their centenary season.

Alan Lugton wrote about James Main. A tragic story of someone who should have the same place in our history as John Thomson has in Celtic's . There's a great piece on him on the Hibs Historical Trust's website too.

Also interesting to hear the size of the crowds, 35,000 at ER v them is impressive. Game v Partick also being played on Christmas Day, a reminder of when Christmas was just another day in a more Presbyterian era.
