Having a more competitive league would undoubtedly improve the scottish game but celtc and the media painting them as the victims when they've rigged the system and hoovered up good young players from the other sides is laughable. If all the clubs worked together for positive change maybe we could end up with a situation where teams that have fairly modest sized grounds and budgets can make the group stages of the cl, like malmo have. There's too much self interest and a blinkered reluctance to admit where the root of the problems exist in our game though and sadly I doubt it'll change any time soon.

Excellent points made.

The Scottish game is ruled by self interest and it's this that holds our game back. Not saying I like her but look at what happened when Budgie tried and failed to get onto the SFA board......our own LD would no doubt suffer the same fate......the powers that be are only interested in maintaining the already inadequate status quo, self interest and jobs for the boys approach. It's frankly embarrassing how our game is run. Has been for years.

What kinda budget do Malmo have and how competitive is the Swedish league? Do Malmo have players on £20k+ per week?

If Park Gardens (if SFA is still there) / Hampden was ever going to have its gates stormed it would have happened in the last 3-4 years. After a bit of a wobble and a re-org tweak back to business as usual.

What is their purpose or "mission statement". Surely sustainability and growth of the game but how to they define and measure this?

Looks like a pretty competitive league. At present after 21 games, there are 2 points separating the top 4 sides and malmo are in 5th, 7 points off gothenburg in top spot. Not sure about the numbers re their budget and top earners but there have been many references in the media to it being quite a bit less than celtics. Malmos stadium in approximately the same size as easter road and while sell outs and champions league qualification will maximise their income I think it's fair to say they're a much smaller club than celtc.

I'd also say that the other clubs in scotland are far from innocent in all this as they have the power to take a stand and push for change but the will simply doesn't seem to be there.

£24m v £2m: Celtic’s squad is worth TWELVE times as much as Malmo’s according to the Daily Rag

Markus Rosenberg was a free from West Brom. Looked a handful.

Nae sympathy, they bring it on themselves. If they want competition give us Brown, Allan and Griffiths back! Having said that, how many leagues are there in the world where there are any more than 2 or 3 teams that stand a realistic chance of winning the league? It's not just Scotland. Even in the self proclaimed 'best league in the world', the likes of Everton, Newcastle, even Liverpool, are unlikely to win it. For a country with a population 10 times bigger than ours, they have 4 teams who are fighting it out most seasons, and even then it's Man Utd who win it more times than not.

With an equity of 226.3 million SEK (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_krona) the club is the richest football club in Sweden as of 2015. The turnover for 2014, excluding player transactions, was 358.8 million SEK

At today's rates that gives them a turnover in excess of £27m - less than Celtic but 4 times bigger than Hibs.

They should stop hoovering up all Dundee Utds best players then ( for example) so that these teams could be a bit more competitive

They hoover up all the talent from Scottish clubs then complain they have little or no competition - laughable!

They poached Armstrong and Mackay-Steven from Utd before the cup final as well.

It's not really the point here though is it? The biggest teams in all leagues take the best players from their smaller competitors, that's nothing unusual. It's celtc and the media"s implication that the lack of competition for them here (on the back of signing the best young talent and rigging the prize money and voting rules) explains their poor performance in European competition. That contradiction is every bit as laughable as the one you've highlighted re scott allan.

Celtic's problem is that if you sign players for between one and two million quid and pay them up to 10K a week, you can skoosh it in Scotland. In Europe that makes you a pretty average side. If they start paying three to four million for players and pay up to 20K a week they have a better chance in Europe, but go out early and they are left with a massively expensive sledgehammer to crack a pretty weak domestic nut.

They cant really blame the domestic league ...... As others have said, you cant have your cake and eat it. Their manager just recently stated that they intend to hoover up more domestic talent, not less. That couldn't be more evident when parting with £35,000 to wrest a promising kid from us. Don't go moaning about a lack of competition when you are doing that.

Dominating domestic football year after year keeps Celtic rich and as a result everybody else stays poor ....... they are the problem with Scottish football.

exactly mate....said it before, celtic couldnt handle competition....if they found themselves in a league they had zero chance of winning, they'd be back down to crowds of 10,000 again.
Scottish football is ******.....until we see change at the top and a concensus across the clubs to put their own self interests to the side, for the greater good of the game.
We are a football back water......

I don't think anybody was exactly happy about losing a player to Celtc, it was merely the lesser of two evils.

I'd say its a common implication when pundits discuss celtc's european short comings. Just last night chris sutton was saying their full backs were struggling because they don't get tested domestically. There have been instances in the past where their coaching and playing staff have said as much, particularly when they were making noises about joining the english league.

As others have alluded to, this an insoluble problem that will never go away. Celtic's annual flirtation with European football will always keep them one level above every other team in the Scottish Premiership, will allow them to buy mediocre foreigners and they wouldn't have it any other way. The annual moan about lack of competition and dreadful playing conditions in Scotland is a weak excuse for a self inflicted problem. Hoovering up every bit of Scottish talent doesn't and will never get them success in Europe. English teams who are successful in Europe are full of tried and tested foreigners. I'm afraid it's groundhog day again for our friends in the west and I love it.

John Collins said that very thing about two weeks ago. Based on past experience, it's only a matter of time before they're at it again.

As we all know, it's quite a common refrain whenever one of them two have been bumped out of Europe previously. If the tribute act ever reach Europe, I expect that'll be one of the things they take on board from their predecessors.

Funny thing is, not a peep form them on the rare occasions that they have done well as to how much they owe to the competition at home.

I think that's what people are complaining about: A team that buys the best players from its competitors then complains about lack of competition.

Has to be down to one or more of the teams in Scotland, cannae see Delia stepping up to the plate for this failure and Collins is probably already doing whatever is required to distance himself from it. No chance whatsoever that between the two of them they couldn't set up celtc to beat Malmo over two legs.
