I'm going to Greece in August and I know a couple of people over there now who are being bitten to bits so was wondering if there is anything out on the market that actually works? something child freindly as well as I'm more concerned about the lad than myself

Don't know about Mosquito's mate but I use Avon Skin So Soft for Midgies and it's marvelous stuff.

Try placing some walnuts in the corner of the rooms and carry some around with you in your pockets.

Little biting insects don't like the smell.

Avon Skin So Soft body lotion spray has worked a treat for me over the years-for those pesky foreign mosquitoes and our home grown midges.

*too slow!

I read somewhere that the sas use it, on that basis I've misappropriated 'er indoors supply when we've been on holiday and its worked a treat. I'm a mosquito magnet when I'm abroad but never had any problems since. works fine on the west coast of Scotland with the midgies as well.

I'm also sure it has to be the skin so soft spray and not the lotion.

Gin - they don't like juniper. 5 or 6 G&Ts they won't go near you

Avon skin so soft is used by Canadian Forces when doing exercises in the woods, etc. so I'm told.
It's always worked for me.

I've done a lot of research into mosquitoes over the years as I have had very bad experiences with mosquitoes in the past.

For a start, I'd only ever risk using Skin so Soft against midges. Avon seem to have done a clever job in the way they've (not) marketed the product but I prefer to use more proven repellents against mozzies.

I always invest in Boots Repel which contains 50% deet. The only times I get bitten now are when I forget to apply it, or once, when I became blase and thought that because I'd not been bitten so far, there couldn't be any mozzies about! Alcohiol may have been involved!

The Asian "Tiger" mosquito is more prevalent in Greece then ever and it can spread numerous diseases. It bites day and night and it is not deterred by walnuts. Read this. (http://www.greek-islands-travel.co.uk/greek-holidays/mosquito-alert-for-greek-visitors.html)

If you do get bitten, this little device (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beurer-IS40-Insect-Bite-Healer/dp/B003U0WBTK) neutralises the poison and stops the itching. A teaspoon run under very hot water will do the same thing, but be careful not to burn yourself.

I'm off to Mallorca soon and I'm tooled up with Mosquito spray - to kill them, Deet Repellant - to keep them from biting me and wall plug-ins - to chase them from my room!

It's also supposed to be Skin so soft & fresh, not just skin so soft.

From the Avon site;

I have heard you can use Skin So Soft as an insect repellent is it true?

We have had reports from Representatives and their customers that Avon Skin So Soft Soft & Fresh (originally Woodland Fresh) fragrance Bath Oil and Dry Body Spray acts as an effective insect repellent. Our Quality Control Department advise that it is the aroma of the product that has this effect. Citronella is in the perfume and as fragrance oils are 'propriety compositions' and the property of the vendor, due to vendor confidentiality, we list this ingredient as Parfum. However this product is marketed and sold by us as a bath preparation only.

We would not recommend any Skin So Soft product for any other use.

Skin So Soft products in any other fragrance do not contain the same ingredients as Soft & Fresh.

Generally speaking something with 20% plus deet was the way to go. Despite numerous scare stories almost every study has proven deet to be safe.

Sadly the biggest problem with deet is that it may no longer be particularly effective against mosquitoes, as with many medicines resistance seems to be a growing problem:

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21519998

Last time I was im Turkey i was given a citronella essential oil by a local that seemed to work very well. I used to be something of a walking buffet table for mosquitoes but I went home after that holiday without a single bite.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1748-5967.2005.tb00146.x/abstract;jsessionid=B7623AA282BCCE83220AE519FC1481 AE.f03t02

I've also been told that catnip oil is effective as well, an Iowa University study found it to be 10 time more effective than deet:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/08/010828075659.htm

The issue with both citronella and catnip is getting the right concentration. Too high and you risk burning your skin, too low and you lose the protection.

My wee sisters just back from Kos and she's got several horrible looking bites. One of which had bubbled up and looks disgusting.

She refused to go get them treated over there and is now on antibiotics. Be careful!

Skin so soft for me when fishing and golfing.

If you do get bitten, use Anthisan on it, which you can get from the chemist for a few quid.
