View Full Version : Scottish Cup - FACTS !!!

The 1902 thing annoys me when it is implied that we have a poor record in the competition. So I had a look at the history of the Scottish Cup to compare us with other teams, and picked out a few facts that I didn’t know or had forgotten about (apologies if this is old news to everyone else….):

After Sunday, only Smeltic, Rangers (RIP), the tramps (1 more) and Aberdeen (2 more) will have been in more finals.

Of those teams, the first 3 are the only teams to have won more finals than they have lost.

Only the teams above, plus Queens Park, Kilmarnock, St. Mirren and Clyde (and Vale of Leven, if you still count them) have won it more than us. :agree:

A third win on Sunday  would put us joint-6th on the winners list, with Kilmarnock, St. Mirren, Clyde and Vale of Leven. Behind the first 4 teams above, and Queens Park.

Outside the bigot brothers, we have lost more finals than anyone (10):grr:, next is Aberdeen with 8 then Dundee Utd with 7.

There are teams that have to go back further than 1902 for their last win - Dumbarton last won it in 1883, Queens Park in 1893. Although they’re both pretty unlikely to get another win.

Our 1902 victory was at Celtic Park, not Hampden (was supposed to be at Ibrox but was moved due to the first Ibrox disaster a week earlier in a Scotland-England game).

Highest winning margin in the final is 5 goals – Renton 6 Cambuslang 1 (1888), Rangers 5 St. Mirren 0 (1934) and, eh, the 1972 final………

Hibs win in 1887 (2-1 v Dumbarton) was on their first appearance in the final. :aok:

The puddle-drinkers biggest defeat was to Rangers in 1996…… 5-1…:na na:

Oh, and at least we have won it – this lot haven't - they lost in the final:

Hamilton (lost 2 finals), Ross County (1), Raith Rovers (1), Albion Rovers (1), Queen of the South (1), Gretna (RIP) (1). :boo hoo:

And this lot have never even made a final:

St. Johnstone, Inverness, Cowdenbeath, Livingston, Alloa Athletic, Arbroath, Ayr United, Brechin, Forfar, Stenhousemuir, Stranraer, Annan Athletic, Berwick Rangers, East Stirlingshire, Elgin City, Montrose, Peterhead and Stirling Albion. :tee hee:

Teams that have won it and are no longer with us:

Rangers, Third Lanark, Vale of Leven, Renton, St. Bernards and Airdrieonians (…….and soon, maybe, you-know-who………:bye:)

Our records not so bad!!!!

A curious little stat is that Hibs have now played more Scottish Cup games (but not ties) than Hearts. Reflects the fact that (as some of your stats indicate) that Hibs are relatively good at getting to semis and/or finals.

I didn't realise that since the 1902 final,we have only beaten celtic once in the cup.
The 4-3 game in the 1986 qf.(what a match that was)
Think we've lost 20 other ties v them since 1902.
Surely this time.Surely.

:top marks Good job. Our record in SC Finals is the worst, and what people remember most. One thing I've always thought would be a good way to measure just how bad our SCF record is.. the total number of fans who have attended a SCF without seeing their team win it. So that's your next assignment... including the 1979 replays.... how many Hibs fans have gone along to Hampden since 1902 without seeing us win it. And who has the next worse record ?

Your starter for 10 (see what I did there :greengrin)...

1972 - 35,000 Hibbies at that one.

We are a bigger club than all of those teams with worse records though :agree:. Hopefully you'll need to make an update to this post after Sunday.

Because we won the semi this year but haven't played the final yet?
I really don't know, just a (not very well) educated guess. For the record I like this thread better with the positive slant it had first.
Oh - my bus is number 111, as far as I'm concerned that's all I need to be convinced it's our year. So the record will soon stand at 3 wins.
