Ok I'll get this one started

Horse meat is the stable diet in many countries.
It was ate in Britain as recently as the WWII. We shouldn't be blinkered just because culture tells us to be.

I think this is a case of the media trying to Stirrup controversy just to sell papers.

Have I missed any?

I'm going to bale before this gets ridiculous.

I can't really see the horsoversy over this to be honest. Horses are just beasts like cows, sheep etc.

Although I'm sure someone will seek to make this into an equinenical matter..............

Surely the only issue is if they are advertised as lamb or beef burgers? I wouldn't have a problem trying horse though.

No mare Tesco burgers for me if they are fillie horse meat.

Next time they send me my clubcard vouchers I'll be telling them to colt. They can dressage this up however they like but I'm not stallion for it.

I'd imagine dead horse would be very cheap in UK or Ireland, just another way to rip us off. What else might they be putting in food and passing it off as something different?

it was always a nap this would come to light at sometime, i reckon the odds will be quite low on greggs introducing a pony pie in the near future :-( if we all knew exactly what was in a wide range of foodstuffs we would probably boke (especially processed foods)

There will be some lame excuse as to why this happened, Tesco and all the others should be told to bolt, I can't see how they can get themselves off the rails with this one.

Quite surprised to see Tesco come first in The Supermarket Sweep. The handicapper has taken a fence at this result which means he is likely to put extra hurdles in their way to prevent a similar outcome next time.

I think all this Taunton of pun makers is unnecessary. Wincanton here and it all kicks off.
Mind you, all this contamination of food will drive people away from processed food, and back into more simple fare, liked cooked bread. Better look out my Towcester.:greengrin

Butchers in Edinburgh are benefiting at least, many of them quoting 10-15% increase in trade on mince and burgers. People buying from a source they can trust rather than being ripped off by supermarkets passing off cheap muck as quality.

As someone that works in a food lab, I can tell you there's quite a few local butchers that sell questionable products like the big guns, albeit on a smaller scale. That's not referring to the current scare but from experience of previous surveys.

I really don't see what the big deal is, people should be worried about all the other ***** that's put into burgers and ready meals. Horse is a decent meat!

Agreed there is no problem with horse meat legitimately entered into the food chain that is fit for human consumption, the problem is with the illegitimate horse meat and the vetinary drugs it may contain. I have grown up as a butchers son and as such have eaten pretty much every meat and offal available. Good local butchers and suppliers can provide provenance of their products.Give me a local reputable butcher any day over the big bully boy supermarkets. I know where all of the meat I consume comes from

There is the potential risk to humans from eating meat with Phenylbutazone in it.

After the BSE scare every bit of beef is supposed to be traceable back to a farm and even individual animal I thought?

If Findus lasagne has turned out to be 100% dobbin meat how does that work then?

All horses, ponies and donkeys must have a horse passport.
The passport helps:

make sure horses treated with certain medicines don’t end up as food for people
prevent the sale of a stolen horse, pony or donkey, as the passport proves its identity
The animal’s rider or keeper must have the passport with them at all times when they’re with the animal, unless it’s in a stable, grazing in a field, or being moved by foot. Owners can take their animals for short rides without one.
You (or the animal’s main keeper) may have to show the passport to a Trading Standards inspector or an animal health officer.

From half watching the news on French tv, my understanding is that the origin of the meat has been traced to Romania via Findus, their suppliers and their subsequent sub contractors.

There are obviously questions to be answered, but it looks to me like the independant control/checking system seems to have worked pretty well in this instance.

As there could be with eating in a restaurant with poor hygiene standards, not really the point though as we are talking about illegitimate horse meat entering the food chain.

We put our trust in things being legal and above board but this seems to be an organised criminal conspiracy passing off horsemeat as something else.
