LAST summer, Gary Hooper was in the running for a place in England’s Under-21 squad for the European Championships in Denmark. Never mind that he was 23 at the time. We could spend an eternity explaining the age qualifications and how a 23-year-old was still deemed eligible for an Under-21 side in Uefa’s eyes, but let’s just say that he was free to play, if selected. The problem was that he wasn’t selected. England scored only two goals – both by Danny Welbeck – in three games before their early exit.
