not really stupid, they prob do it at christmas, new year, st andrews day etc so why shouldnt they do it for st patricks day?

The OP has a valid point.

I hate all this nonsense where people are looking to profit from every date in the calander. St. Patricks day is now fair game as we don't need much of an excuse to get rat-ersed in Scotland. I think it's only going to get worse where you're going to be made to feel guilty if you don't buy whiskey on St.Andrews day or buy beer to celebrate St.Georges day.

Valentines, Easter, Haloween etc...never used to mean much in the way of gifts even ten years ago and it was all about non-material gestures.

Nowadays it's as if they're trying to make you feel like an inconsiderate loser with a small tadge if you don't buy your other half a bunch of flowers and I-pad 2 to celebrate the changing of the clocks.

I didn't say it bothered me to any great extent. I simply said I thought it was stupid. Anyway the thread got your attention and you found the need to reply. Therefore it bothered you more than it bothered me. :wink:

As for Burns, there's nothing worse than a bad Burns supper - and I've been to a few. However good ones (generally run by Burns clubs) with speakers and singers who know their stuff can be an absolute hoot, not to mention the cultural enlightenment.

I'm out in America at uni, and the people here go mental for it. After all, they are all 'Irish' so they claim. 'Cos their great grandparents uncles wife was Irish they are all half Irish. :rolleyes:
