Leaving aside the huns for a moment....

Can anyone explain why this player got a yellow card? What rule was infringed by the celebration?

Hapoel Tel Aviv striker Itay Shechter insists that his unique celebration wearing a kippah after scoring the Israeli team's third goal in the 3-2 victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League play-off was not a provocation.

Shechter said that putting on the red kippa with Hapoel's emblem was a premeditated act.
He explained: “A Hapoel fan at the airport gave me the kippah and I thought to myself I'll put it in my sock and if God let's me score I'll put it on and say Shema Yisrael. I was not thinking about provoking anybody, I was only thinking about how happy all the Jewish people at home would be watching the game on TV.”

Hapoel manager Eli Guttman said: “I don't have a problem with Christian players who cross themselves after they score so why shouldn't Shechter pray the way he wants to.”

Shechter was booked by the Portuguese referee for putting on the kippah. Hapoel have not indicated whether they will appeal the booking.

The JC can reveal that the kippah was given to Shechter by Moshe Zinger, a 60-year-old religious Hapoel fan who travelled to Salzburg despite suffering from cancer. He said: "Seeing Hapoel win and Shechter put on the kippah gave me such a lift that I reckon if they checked me now they would find I am healthy."

What was in the commentry? I missed it.

I'm guessing it was either because he pulled something out his sock and put it on (I think the boy Celtic signed said he had to stop doing the Zorro thing because he was getting booked) and/or because it was a religious symbol. I don't think you're allowed religious clothing (but people are allowed to bless/cross/whatever themselves).

Yes he pulled something out his sock, which is not part of the strip, and was therefore not allowed on the field of play..... Pretty daft booking all the same...........

Oops, my bad. I thought the comms said the goalscorer was booked for a confrontation with the Red Bull number 14. It was obviously a teammate.

was it because he was seen to be celebrating with a team mate that had a fore on his back?

Watching the Anderlecht v Partizan game and the visiting striker scored to put his side 2-0 ahead. Said striker then rushed behind the goal to celebrate with the travelling fans before setting off down the shy line to whoop it up with the subs etc on the bench.

No booking

Referee?

Seems such celebrations only get penalised in domestic games

Reasonable celebrations are allowed, but the practice of choreographed
celebrations is not to be encouraged when it results in excessive time-wasting
and referees are instructed to intervene in such cases. (http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/81/42/36/lawsofthegame_2010_11_e.pdf)

The link is to the laws of the game published on the FIFA site. I'd guess that this is the reason for the caution. (Page 118)

Deserves a booking IMO - shouldn't be bringing extra items out onto the field to aid celebrations.

That being said, he's been done up like a kippah.
