I'm thinking about hinting for a coffee percolator/grinder thingy for fathers day.
Does anyone one here "do" this drug ?

Do you have the all in one machine which grinds your beans and spurts out your freshly made coffee or do have a seperate grinder and a cafetiere ?

Where do you buy your coffee ?

Cheers

Me.
.
I like 'plain' filter coffee so have a filter coffee maker. It has a timer on it so that Mrs Jack and I wake up to freshly made coffee every morning.
.
One thing about standard filter coffee makers is they keep it at 80 degrees hot I think. IMO this isnt hot enough, look for a 90 degree one.
.
We get top strength from the supermarket as our normal coffee.
.
Some continentals put a tiny wee pinch of salt in their filter coffee when they make it. Quiet nice but I dont do it all the time.

I have a couple of Cafetieres, a stove top espresso maker and an electric coffee maker, but not a grinder although I've always fancied getting one.

The trouble for me is that while I'd love the smell of freshly ground beans, the novelty would wear off quite quickly and I'd be back on the packet stuff in no time.

Also, grinding your own coffee a bit more complicated than you'd think.

More information here. (http://coffeetea.about.com/od/grinding/bb/grinders.htm)

You can get beans at Tesco and Asda and Starbucks and Costa sell their beans too.

Needless to say, there are lots of places to buy online.

For example. (http://www.edinburghteacoffee.co.uk/)

I have had virtually every gadget on the market for coffee making, including grinders and steamers(cappucino) but I can honestly say the only thing that does it for me is the good old cafetiere.
I have one at work as well as home and I feel it's less 'faff' than full-on coffee makers. Just boil the kettle, let it cool for a minute as coffee should NEVER be made with boiling water, add to cafetiere and let stand for a few minutes.
Another wee tip, I keep my ground coffee in the fridge, apparently it preserves the 'oils' from the beans better? And if you're not a snob, may I suggest coffee from Lidl, not as good as the premium types from the big 4 stores but at the price you pay makes a cracking everyday mug!

A cafetiere is simply a piece of equipment and the flavour and taste will be the same regardless of the piece of kit you use to brew. You'd be better to buy a cheap unit and spend your savings on a selection of different coffees.

I have a couple of cafetieres (both Bodum) a couple of little espresso machines and a Turkish coffee pot (a mbrikia) that boils coffee on the hob. I've got a local Cypriot store nearby that sells decent grounds and that's what I've been drinking recently.

My other advice would be to steer clear of supermarkets if buying ground coffee. Coffee is an openly traded commodity and the supermarkets (and major brand names) buy on price, not quality. You'll get a far superior bean/ground if you buy from a specialist retailer. Admittedly, you'll pay a slight premium, but the improved quality is well worth the extra few £££'s.

I've had a few but Bodum make nice simple ones that work. Some stores sell fancy-dan looking ones but you have to watch the quality of the 'plunger' as you don't want coffee grounds getting in to your drink.
You'll easily get a cafetiere for under £10, from a 1-cup to a 4-cup.

Like my coffee, but restrict myself, usually, to one a day. At work I have an electric Bialetti which is super duper. At home I have a De Longhi Espresso machine. Cannae be bothered grinding my own beans though. Lavazza or Illy for me.
