Why do people still call The Netherlands Holland incidentally?

If I was from the Netherlands but not Holland I think I'd get tired of it and as Scots we should be familair enough with that!

Ignorance, basically.

Although, I met a Dutch couple recently, and I asked them that question. They were quite happy to say they were from Holland.

Which, come to think of it, they were.

Right, a load of people are going to tell me this isn't racist. They'll mention Weegies, Jambos and fat people.

I think it is intolerably racist, it shows extreme insensitivity from a race that was responsible for introducing Apartheid. The only "joke" I can see is that a black man (who looks like a monkey) is carrying a Dutchman on his back.

Maybe we should get over the whole thing, just like the Dutch never did.

Am I just being over sensitive? Cue the apologists.............

The Netherland literally means 'low country'. We tend to use that to describe Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg.

We also call Germany Germany and not Deutschland. We refer to Japan rather than Nippon, Italy rather than Italia, Spain not Espana, Austrai rather than Österreich, etc. In fact France is about the only country in Europe that the name is no corrupted.

I was told by a Dutchman that Holland is the name for the northern part of the Netherlands. When asked what the name for the southern part was he hesitated and then replied 'Belgium'!

I think people in Friesland and Groningen would strongly object to being told they were from Holland.

Fair enough, there could be something in that. At the same time, it could be misinterpreted. Given that their great rivals are Germany, it would surely have been more apt to have a white guy with a Germany strip on.

For all the cr*p they speak about tolerance, the Dutch are amongst the most racist people I have come across. They did ***** all to fight apartheid.

So why is the Dutch Football Federation called KNVB, and not KHVB? And the Government website www.government.nl, and no .hl?

North and South Holland are two provinces in the country, but are by no means the only ones.

In other news, the Netherlands Tourist Board's website is www.holland.com

It's not the same as calling countries by their local names.

The name of the country, in English, is The Netherlands, North and South Holland are only two of the twelve regions which makes this up.

It's a bit like saying that the whole of the UK should be termed England. We get upset about people doing that don't we?

I have plenty of Dutch family, and I've always been lead to believe that Holland is a region in the country Netherlands. However, on saturday night i was talking to my uncle about the WC and was refering to it as Holland, I then realised I was doing this and asked him, and he couldn't give two hoots which one I said.

Also previously I asked my cousin(from a different uncle), who is my age, what the difference between Netherlands and Holland were, she didn't have a clue and uses both regularly.

Now I'm not sure where they were raises in the Netherlands, so they might be from Holland regions, but I've always found the Dutch didn't care.

No it's not, it's like calling Scotland Fife, or England Kent.

Much the same really. We're basically a region within the UK and its like the whole country being called the name of the one of the other regions so all works out the same as when the whole of the UK is called England.

And you'll find those that don't care in the Netherlands are from Holland somewhere, much like the English wouldn't take much offence to the UK being called England.

Anyway, was just a wee point, back to the thread..
