Attack on pub owned by ex-Hibs star

Published Date: 02 November 2009

A PUB owned by former Hibs star Paul Kane has been attacked just three months after he took over.
The Four in Hand on Easter Road had every one of its windows smashed shortly after 4.30am today.

And vandals have covered the outside walls, windows and pavement in blue paint, which can be seen trailing down Easter Road.

Kane said the attack was a "mystery", but insisted he would not allow any disruption to his new business.

The 44-year-old said: "I got a call at 4.30am this morning when the alarm went off and when I came down the place was secure, so it must have happened after that.

"I'll have to call my staff and the guy that was on last night and see what happened, but it's a complete mystery.

"You can speculate about the blue paint or whatever but I've no idea why this happened.

"There were no problems on Saturday or Sunday or anything like that."

Kane added: "I just want to get everything cleared up and get back to normal – we'll definitely open as usual today."

One neighbour, who lives above the pub, said she was shocked by the attack.

She said: "I didn't hear anything last night but my boyfriend said he was woken up by banging during the night.

"I can't quite believe that, there's been no trouble or anything before."

Former midfielder Kane played at Easter Road from 1982 to 1990, making 247 appearances and scoring 33 goals for the club.

Kane later played for Aberdeen – who were defeated 2-0 by Hibs on Saturday – and later played for the Norwegian side, Viking

‘Hibs will tear Aberdeen FC apart’Says former Red Paul Kane
By Sean Wallace
Published Evening Express: 29/10/2009

BEWARE – Hibs’ new ‘Famous Five’ strike-force could run riot against Aberdeen FC at Easter Road.

That is the warning from former Aberdeen FC midfielder Paul Kane, who fears the Aberdeen FC defence could be ripped apart if Hibs’ attackers hit top gear in the capital. With the addition of striker Anthony Stokes from Sunderland, Paul reckons Hibs now have five lethal hitmen who can put Aberdeen FC to the sword in Edinburgh.

The 44-year-old, who also starred for the Edinburgh side and now owns Easter Road pub the Four In Hand, said: “Hibs’ strength is going forward in attack and they have players who can really punish Aberdeen FC.

“Aberdeen FC’s defence must be 100% switched on and entirely focused for the whole game. If they are not, the Hibs attack has the potential to rip them apart.”

Hibs’ fearsome five have scored 13 goals between them this season.
That is three more than Aberdeen’s entire tally this term, in all competitions.

“The league table does not lie,” said Paul. “Hibs are in third place and in better form than Aberdeen FC who have struggled to score, despite having experienced strikers like Lee Miller. "

I passed the Four In Hand at the back of one and Paul Kane was out with a brush, clearing up the aftermath. I feel sorry for the guy!

I was in for a pint there before the game and there was certainly a bunch of guys hanging about outside who had that casual look about them - I noticed them because I'm a regular there on matchdays and most of them were not. Baby crew would have been a complete misnomer though as half of them were in their forties with beer bellies to match. Didn't see any trouble at the time though but I was only in before the game and not after.
Whoever done it though - ie damaging a Hibby institution like the four in hand - they deserve lynching.

Sounds like a protection racket? *
Was that not part of the casuals' outreach work in the wider community?

There's probably a more current term but I grew up watching Bob Stack in "The Untouchables".
