One visit to Easter Road, and agreement to
return and a departure - Gudjon Thordarson's Hibs career...
In what must be regarded as the
shortest managerial career ever in Scottish football, Gudjon
Thordarson signed then unsigned himself from the staff at Hibs after
making changing his mind yesterday morning as he arrived at Easter Road!
Despite having agrees terms on Sunday afternoon, the Icelander arrived
at the stadium to meet Rod Petrie and Jim Clark but used the opportunity
to inform the Hibs Managing Director that he was changing his mind over
the short term contract that he would be working under.
At the heart of this change of mind
was Thordarson's wish to 'keep himself available to seek permanent
employment'. Speaking about his decision, the 48 year old former
Stoke and Barnsley manager said,
"There was no fall-out, I just made my mind up and there
are a lot of reasons for that. The club wanted to appoint somebody
for two weeks but I’m looking for a permanent job - or at least as
permanent as it can be in football." Thordarson also praised Rod
Petrie and indicated that he may look to throw his own name in for the
job on a permanent basis. "I didn’t think it was the right thing
for me to take the club for just two weeks. I had good, healthy
discussions with Rod Petrie on Sunday and I enjoyed that. He is an
ambitious man and he wants to take the club forward. I didn’t think I
could put my mark on the team in only two weeks’ time but I’m pretty
sure people would see a big difference with me in charge for six to ten
months. I don’t know if people will see this as arrogance, but I have a
proven CV."
"I would still
be interested in the job on a permanent basis. It is a big club which
has been underachieving for some time now and they have a great support
base. If they wanted to speak to me regarding the position permanently I
would certainly be open to discussions." However, his rejection of
the terms currently on offer is bound to send his name spiralling down
any list of potential managers that the club comes up with, if indeed it
stays on the list at all!

Colin Murdock gets to grips with Novo (sns)
Meanwhile Hibs goalkeeper Daniel
Andersson has spoken of the effort put in by all players in Saturday's
victory over Dundee at Easter Road. The Swedish keeper keep
another clean sheet although it wasn't through lack of effort on the
part of tricky striker Nacho Novo who forced Andersson into a couple of
close range saves as well as hitting the post in the first half.
Speaking to the official website after the game, Andersson said of Novo,
"Novo is a very tricky and a good player - he can
create anything from nothing so you have to be aware of him. He did
manage to get one on target but luckily I blocked that one with my legs
– and it felt good." The Dundee striker though didn't get
everything his own way as the Hibs defence and midfield put in a
sterling effort, a fact acknowledged by Andersson.
"They were very good. The defending
started all the way from the very top to the back four. It was a good
team effort today." With the return from injury of Grant Brebner,
the Hibs midfield had a manner to it that had been sadly missing over
the past couple of months with the home side content to stroke the ball
about across the park for longer periods than normal as they waited for
an opening to develop that would allow Riordan and McManus to head for
goal. Despite not being able to play for the full 90 minutes, the
reaction that Brebner got both before the match and as he left the field
was well deserved according to Daniel. "Yeah, it was good. I'm
very pleased for him. He's had a tough year with that arm injury. I'm
very pleased."
With Hibs next up against Partick
Thistle in the club's final home game of the season, the board and the
players will be hoping for a good send off although the chances of that
happening on a Wednesday night against the team that has already been
relegated from the league can only be listed as 'poor'. With
attendances struggling into the mid-6,000 mark in recent weeks, Hibs
will do well to get that again for tomorrow night's match.
