Jim and Gerry
deserved that!
Tam backs under fire caretaker bosses as new
man is set to take up the temporary reigns...
Hibs 'in favour again' striker
Tam McManus leapt to the defence of under fire co-caretaker managers
Jim Clark and Gerry McCabe after Saturday's win over Dundee proclaiming
that they deserved the victory that the home side picked up in front of
another sparsely populated Easter Road. With the new temporary
manager sitting in the main stand with his family to watch Hibs for the
first time, McManus was as much in the dark about events as anyone else
at Easter Road on Saturday afternoon.
"We don't know what to expect but
obviously we'll give him all we've got, the same as we've given Gerry
and Clarky. I think you saw today how much everybody worked for each
other and how much we wanted the result, and we got it for them so I'm
glad we've got a result for them as they deserve it." Indeed,
there was a noticeable increase in the work rate of the team as a whole
during the game with the midfield in particular, driven on by the
returning Grant Brebner, getting forward and back to help out as and
when required whilst providing the drive in the middle of the park that
has been so badly lacking over the last couple of months. Whether
any of the players lifted their game for the new boss or not, it was
done without the team meeting Thordarson who came nowhere near the
dressing rooms ahead of the match. "I think he was at the game
today but we've not met him yet. He never came into the dressing room or
anything before the game so we'll meet him, probably on Monday and we'll
get on with it and play the game on Wednesday."

With Colin Murdock, Stephen Glass
and Grant Brebner all playing at about the level in England that would
have seen them come across the Icelander during their spells down south,
it appears that the team know very little about him although McManus
expects his arrival on the training ground next week to have a positive
effect on those fit enough to train. "I don't think there's anyone
that knows a lot about him. I think he was the manager at Stoke and
another team, Barnsley I think, so we'll need to wait and see what
happens! I think we'll get a wee lift from it, it's always the same when
a new manager comes in, you work that wee bit harder to try and impress
him so I think that'll be the case from now until the end of the season
anyway." Despite the length of the deal, McManus is sure that if
certain players do enough then they could see themselves being around
Easter Road for longer.
"I think if we win our three games
it will be very hard for them to say no but we're in the dark as much as
anybody else and we don't know what's going to happen until Monday when
we actually meet the new manager." With the players only being
told of Thordarson's impending arrival on Saturday morning by Jim Clark
after they'd read it in the newspapers and heard it on radio on
the way to the stadium, one thing that is certain is that some players
are now feeling more apprehensive than they were even just a few days
ago. "I think there's more for the players who are out of contract
to be honest, they don't know what's happening yet as I don't think
they've been approached about new contracts so the new guy's going to
have to come in and maybe have to judge them to give a new contract or
whatever so from that point of view, I'm worried for them, but we'll
wait for Monday."
Another name has been added to the
list of potential 'permanent' managers over the weekend after former
England assistant manager John Gorman apparently expressing an interest
in the vacancy Despite spending the bulk of his career in England,
the Scot was seen at Easter Road in the company of ex-Hibs player Darren
Jackson who is now involved in player/staff management. With
Gorman being a higher profile than those previously linked with the job,
the temptation must be there for the Hibs board to go for someone who
could perhaps tempt a better quality of player to make the trip north
and get Hibs back into the top six position that the board and fans
desire, if not demand.
