Why should Queen Elizabeth II be the only person to bestow awards on individuals at New Year time? As I can't answer my own question I've decided I'm just going to award a few gongs of my own -- on behalf of Hibs.net of course! Lets have a light hearted look at theses Gongs of Praise

Gongs of praise
Hibs.net hands out a few awards of its own

by Katy Fraser

I NOTICE THAT GARY McALLISTER GOT A MEDAL from the Queen in the latest honours list!  Not bad for someone who will be best remembered for missing a penalty!  What awards would Hibs.net make I wonder?  Lets have a wee look and see why don't we - after all, as I write this the site has mysteriously gone down.  Have to change that name to Rivals 364 if they don't get it working again soon!

Anyway - to those awards.  First has to be the BEM, which many might be tempted to think means the British Empire Medal when, in fact, it means Best Ever Manager!  A few contenders as you might imagine.  Obvious names like Craig Brown and Jim Duffy spring to mind but it just has to be Dick Advocaat thanks to his stunning feat of spending millions of pounds whilst Managing Rangers out of Europe twice in the one season.  Obviously he was very influential also in getting his replacement signed up so that the new man - I forget his name for the moment - can also be Manager of a side going out of Europe twice in the same season!  Not only that but its two different sides!  What an achievement that will be and so richly deserved!

The next award is the GJM which, of course, stands for the Ginger Judas Medal!  Contenders included Alex McLeish and, erm, well nobody else really as there could be only one winner of this award!!  This was an interesting one because ERII (that the Queen, not a new Stadium we're building in that old car park of ours) actually contacted Hibs to ask how they would feel about such an award being made to a former Manager.  As ever, the articulate and forthcoming Chief Executive responded with a statement suggesting he felt such an award was worthy of McLeish as his leaving must surely be "to the benefit of Hibernian Football Club."

The MOTP award - that's Man of the People award went to Hibs Chairman Malcolm McPherson who spent an hour before the recent Derby match  supping beer in the Roseburn Bar!  He would have stayed longer but I understand somebody nearby upset him when he was heard to ask his mate "When did Chris Robinson grow his beard back in again and why is he mixing with us Hibbies?"  It's not true, incidentally, that they were separated at birth!!

The MHP award - most hated person award - was a close fought contest.  In with a shout were Wallace Mercer (his ability to generate such hatred over such a long number of years is something for which he should surely be admired!); Arab Jacques - webmaster of the Rivals Dundee United site who shamelessly stoked the fires of Matty Jack hatred on the Hibs.net messageboard in a pathetic attempt to encourage the thousands of Hibs.net regulars to post on his site and thereby increase his hits; Alex McLeish (a popular nominee in a number of awards) for being a Judas and leading Hibs and their supporters up the path right to the bitter end; David Murray for continually whining that other than Celtic there is no real competition in Scottish Football and then nicking everything that appears to be doing well from those same Clubs which let him down so badly; Dougie McDonald - the allegedly or is that seemingly inept and incompetent Referee who helped Dunfermline beat us 1 - 0 recently and last but not least, McDonald's brother <sic> in arms Mike McCurry who sent off Laursen and McManus in the recent game against Rangers.  After much deliberation - well 30 seconds worth if truth be told - McCurry won the day.

BBIF means Biggest Balloon in Football award and again there were a few contenders.  Gordon Smith of Radio punditry fame for, well do you need an explanation?  Chris Robinson for being, erm Chris Robinson.  Alex McLeish - yes him again - for thinking Hibs fans believe him when he says he still cares; Chick Young for thinking we might believe he really is a St. Mirren fan; Wee Stew the Stranraer fan for thinking that we care what he says when he rattles on like an illiterate.  And the winner is ............ Ivano Bonetti for wearing those suits  hahaha.  Hhhrrrrmmm - eh sorry, got carried away a wee bit there.

The MAPOTY award is unique to Hibs.net -- well its not really but who gives a toss about the others!?  Its the Most Annoying Poster of the Year award.  Loads of contenders here and I list them in no particular order!  There's SUPERHIBEES who has an A level in pessimism; Nizz who clearly has no A levels, or H levels or O levels - just kidding ya big Jambo bairn!  What about Hibsdude who has a fixation for David Zitelli but seems to hate McManus and Luna and Hurtado and anyone else who might get picked ahead of Daveeed; there's Robman, a new recruit I think but someone who's still to learn that using the * isn't going to keep him out of trouble but land him in it instead!  We could go for Inspector Jambo, who seems to have a never ending supply of happy pills as he ends just about every post with "he he he" or finally - and this is our winner - Brother Gerard, whose obsession with the banned Bloobell led to all the Admin's threatening a verbal doing if he didn't shut up about Rangers and his damned brothers!

Last award is the UHA - Unsung Hero Award.  Fierce competition here.  Stuart Crowther and his team for providing a superb site which is miles better than anything else of an Hibernian nature on the web.  Often criticised and occasionally attacked, Stu rarely gets the praise he deserves (no, I'm not getting paid to say it!!) and would have been a worthy winner.  The Hibs.net Admins - faceless but not faint hearted they boldly go where others fear to tread and make the messageboard a safe place to live!  On the Club front we have Paul Fenwick who mainly performs well but gets little recognition; Malcolm Colquhoun who is the Hibs physio and just works away quietly at keeping our players as fit as possible; Tam McCourt who has the pitch at Easter Road in tip top condition.  The award goes, however, to surely the biggest unsung hero of them all - Alex McLeish, a man who left us enough time to appoint a decent replacement and avoid the relegation that was steamrollering our way under his control!!  What a hero!

Apologies to anyone who might take offence at this article - it was meant to be and hopefully is, lighthearted.  A Happy and Hibby New Year to you all.
